I want to have my shotgun drilled & tapped so I can mount a scope on it. I'm looking for a good gunsmith in the Waterloo/ Cedar Rapids area. I would prefer to NOT have to ship the gun....looking for somebody within an hours drive.

Gander Mountain, or even better but a little further Daryl's Gun Shop in State Center. They have done the work you want done on my shotgun.

There's the Bullet Hole in Evansdale.  Not sure what kind of wait you'd have because he has been really slow when I used him.  He works out of his house and it ain't purddy, but the work he did for me was very good.

Thanks for the info on Daryl's Gun Shop....was hoping for something a little closer. Are you talking Gander Mountain in Ceadr Rapids??

I have had some work done in the past at The Bullet Hole. Didn't know he was still in business...thought he got out of it when he was flooded back in '08. You're right on the waiting with him. Took about 6 weeks for him to put a second bead on an old gun of mine.

Anybody else have any recommendations???

A couple I know of but they are a little farther than an hour.  First is Casad's Gunsmithing in Davenport, there might be a backlog, he is good and the backlog speaks for itself.  Second is Brownells in Montezuma.  They have great services and would call them first.  I can't wait for them to open the new shop in Grinnell.  Gonna be a lot closer for me...like 20 minutes....it's not gonna be good on the ol bank account!  Good luck!

P.S.  I would stay away from Gander...not first hand info but have had friends tell me horror stories..

Thanks for the info. I called Brownells and they said they don't do work there. They also will not recommend nor tell you of shops in your area.....don't want there name associated with somebody else's work incase the work would be subpar. They give me a website of a list of gunsmiths from all over the country.   http://gunsmiths.com/index.php
I found this site with a list of gunsmiths/shops.  http://guns.beelocate.com/

I called Gander( Cedar Rapids). The don't do any work at the store. They send all their work to their shop in Missouri (or was it Oklahoma?). Will cost about $75.

Called Scheels in Cedar Falls and they send all their work to their store in Des Moines. Will also cost about about $75.

Has anybody heard of Davis Firearms Specialists in Fayette Ia.?? They are only about 45 minutes away.
