Remington 870 problem

 ???
I just got my new 870 last week. Took it out of box yesterday and disassembled to clean packing grease and to lube. Got it apart no problem. Start putting It together and I press the little detente or shell holders on each side of receiver, slide action bars in with the bolt and bolt carrier sitting on bars. I can get it started in an inch or so past the detent tabs and then it feels like it's binding up?
And the action bars won't go back Into the receiver plus the bolt and carrier seem to just flop around in there?? Are those bars suppose to ride in a groove?
I have taken machine guns, grenade launchers, pistols, rifles and who knows what all apart while in military, this one has me stumped?

If I understand what you are saying you may need to keep the shell holders in a little longer.  If you did not already I would definitely look up disassembly videos on YouTube.  I too had some difficulty with the 870 initially.

I depressed them, maybe I need to hold them until the bars slide in further?
I did look up some videos and they look almost effortless going back in.
What holds the bolt and carrier in the receiver once it slides back in?

I have had that exact experience with those bars. Try this. Push the two bars with the bolt assembly in place into the slots at the front of the receiver just so they catch. Then alternate pressing the right and left hand release latches on each side while slowly advancing the slider bars/bolt assembly into the receiver. It seems that one of the slider bars needs to catch before the other one in order to seat correctly. Just take your time and it will suddenly fall right in place.

I hope that this helps. :anim_25:

Every time I take mine apart I have the same problem.  When breaking 870 down you are suppose to press either the right or the left side in, I don't remember which.  When reassembling you are suppose to press the opposite side in.  I just press both in at the same time when disassembling or reassembling.  Don't give up you are doing it right.  Sometimes I press both in and put the forearm on a wall and press gently.  good luck

Yes you need to hold them just a touch longer, you almost need 3 hods LOL.. some times when you have pressure from trying to slide it together it catches and ya gotta let it slide back re press the catches and then slide it in.

Thanks for the tips. Will give it another go this afternoon.

Yeah it's like a 3 step process.. Set the bolt and carrier in the pump slide.. Start them depress the right catch .. Push in .. Depress the left catch.. Push in and wiggle. I thought I tore mine up the first time I broke it down.

Ok, I got it back together on the 5th try this afternoon.
It is tricky, maybe because its still new and tight?
Bought a box of 7.5 bird shot to cycle thru.
Thanks again
