How often do you guys give your shotgun barrel a really good cleaning?
What's your preferred method of cleaning?

I DEEP clean mine before season/patterning it. Then i clean it after each shot with a bore snake and alcohol during patterning the gun. once patterned i deep clean it again and just swab it after each shot during season.

Prob overkill but i want it as clean as possible to maximize my pattern each time.  Clarke had a "How to" deep cleaning thread on here somewhere if you do a search you can prob find it.

Check out the barrel polish thread. It's a sticky somewhere. Works wonders.

I use the bore scrubber foam in the blue can (don't remember the brand of hand) and I do the denatured alcohol wipe down after each time afield if it fired.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Here's a link to that "Deep Cleaning" process. http://allaboutshooting.com/article_info.php?articles_id=282

It really helps.

Skeeterbait

I use the JB paste/Kroll/Skotchbrite process once per year before putting the gun away in the summer.  Since I shoot receiver mounted reflex sight I do not remove the barrel durring the season.  I use a bore snake thru the barrel around 10 passes after every shot.

hookedspur

I deep clean mine at the start of season ,then 2 pass through with a dry bore snake after ea. shot at the range.
Then clean at the end of the day after a shot on a hunt.
My go to gun shoots almost as good dirty as it does clean,
but my backup want his butt wiped after every shot.

I will only deep clean one time prior to a season, hunting, clays or still target.

For hunting guns, I will clean it in different ways depending upon weather and use. If it's wet or shot several times, I'll use a dry brush, a patch dampened with Hoppe's #9 and then a dry patch or two.

For still target shooting, it really depends upon the gun. Some respond better to a dry brushing, some to a bore snake, some to a brush and then damp patch followed by a dry patch and some like to be shot dirty "X" number of times before I do anything. That's pretty much true for every shooter on the circuit. It's really all just spending some time with your guns.

The real importance of deep cleaning is to get the gunk out of your gun so that you can then see how it shoots best. It also allows you to see the condition of the bore very easily. After I deep clean a gun for the first time, I shoot it without any type of cleaning until patterns start to degrade. That way I know if it likes to be shot clean, after "X" number of shots or really dirty. They can all be little different.

Lastly, the gun that seems to benefit more from this process than any other is the Mossberg 835, especially those with short barrels.

Thanks,
Clark
