Question about a mossberg 500 "turkey"

Hello, i just got ahold of a mossy 500, i believe its the turkey model, at first glance i thought it was an 835, it is in woodland camo, and has the ported barrel just like the 835. The gun apears to be a few years old, but is new in the box.

A buddy of mine had it, he was looking for a 22 mag to hunt foxes with, i had a single shot that he wanted to trade so i figured what the heck, you can never have too many turkey guns.

My question is, which choke tubes work with this gun? I dont believe the 835 chokes will work? I believe possibly the same ones that winchester and browning use? Do any of you have one of these guns, which choke worked good for you? I know all guns are different, but just looking for amgood starting point, thanks.

It uses the standard Mossberg accuchoke.  The browning invector not invector plus works in it too.  The old winchester chokes will also work.  There are also some other brands of older chokes that will work too.

That gun uses the standard Win-Choke threads. It's one of the earliest thread types and most if not all after market makers make chokes using that thread pattern.

I have several 500s with different barrel lengths as well as other models of Mossbergs that use the same choke. I've tried a variety of chokes with them over the years. It pretty much depends on how much you want to spend. Several work quite well. It's hard for me to find anything that patterns better than the SSX, especially with #6 or #7 shot.

Since that gun is NIB but several years old, I'd recommend that you thoroughly clean every part of it, including the fire control unit (trigger group), inside the receiver and of course the bore. At one time Mossberg used some grease very much like Cosmolene that over time can harden (or it may just be very sticky depending upon how it's been stored) and cause problems if not thoroughly removed before use. It's important to remove it all because it can attract dirt, unburned powder and effect performance.

my son has the same one,  give it a GOOD cleaning and polish the barrel his loves the jellyhead 660 and 3in magblends

Thank you all very much for the info. I have heard good things about the jellyhead and the ssx. Does anyone know who sells the ssx choke for tis particular thread type? Inhave looked several places but are out of stock. Thanks again.
