Planning a hunt to S.D. Black hills this spring. Where is the best place to order maps that show all roads and trails and private vs. public land. Any tips or info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have hunted the Black Hills for the last 4 years. You can get a good road map that is given out everywhere in the Black Hills,,all stores have them.

That being said, after May 1st they open the gates on all roads,,and ATVS are everywhere! Not hunting just riding,....it is big business out there.

The best sources I have found for maps that best show all of the information you would want to have, and especially the road systems and land status, are the Forest Service maps and Bureau of Land Management maps.  I suspect there are FS maps available for that area,...not sure about BLM.  You should go to the Forest Service and BLM websites and see.  You should be able to order the maps from those sites, I think.

If you by a gazetteer of south Dakota it will show you every road, path, and pond in South Dakota.  Those things are amazing.  I have one for Missouri and it shows everything....Danny

Thanks for all the info so far. Anyone else that has more tips, please chime in. After the tip about gates being opened May 1st, I am thinking I should go hunt before the ATV's get in there. What do you guys think? Can not wait to get out there. I am like a kid waiting for Christmas!! :presents2:

I hunted South Dakota last year for the first time.  I ordered maps from trailsillustrated.com.  They come in a two pack North and South.  I hunted the North half and received some helpful information from members on this site.  We killed three birds in three days and had a blast.  Got to know a couple of locals and they definitely recommend hunting before the gates open.  Last year the gates didn't open on the 1st because of all of the snow but typically that's when they open the roads. Good luck!

Bear Collector,

I have gone out the last two springs and have hit opening weekend which of course that time of year the potential for TERRIBLE weather is a very real issue.  Unfortunately for me I have struck out the last two years because of that.  I was out there this fall and did some serious scouting and located alot of birds, however, early season they tend to stay down towards the homes.  All in all you can't beat the area to hunt, lot of birds in certain areas and the scenery is amazing!  Keep in touch with me maybe we can meet up out there and share some tips!
