According to an article in Petersen's Hunting they are slated to hit the shelves in Nov/Dec.  I can't wait!  I think the ammo. companies are realizing that the HTL market is starting to thin (OVERPRICED!)so they are looking at ways to innovate an old technology like copper plated lead and give you the killing power of HTL at a fraction of the price.  I know Federal knocked it out of the park with their Turkey Thug load and I hope they keep that same formula.  Winchester has always been a leader in shotshell ammo. so this Shot Lok from what I have read is some pretty amazing stuff.  You may see guys hunting with #4 shot like they did back in the day!  Some may disagree but lead does still kill a turkey as effectively as HTL, HTL has just always had the patterning advantage over lead.  This stuff from Winchester looks like lead with a turbo charger!

3 thoughts:

1. I wonder if we'll see "locked" HTL offerings

2. At 70 yards you better be ready to do some head stomping.

3. Pretty cool.

I don't expect a locked hevi load jive, hevi is harder than lead. It won't deform while accelerating down the barrel like , or as bad as, lead. But, they may prove me wrong...

Its still a lead load at the end of the day.  I have a hard time believing those pics but regardless the shell is still a 40 yard shell.

If these are any improvement over the regular HV's they will be a heck of a good round as the HV's have always been a great round.

They mention 20 gauge loads in the article but not in the test stats. With the plethora of chokes available today the patterns may be opened up with more open chokes or even fixed chokes that were not giving suitable patterns before. Sixes at 70 yards don't compute as death kills due to loss of energy.

I do hope that they go with fives and sixes if and when they make them available for 20 gauge.

Question about how dirty barrels and chokes may get due to the resin turning to "powder" in the combustion process. The best news I see is the increase in pattern density at 40 yards and hope that this may make some previously unacceptable guns a gun capable of producing solid kills beyond 30 yards.

Note that the 2 oz. load contains 1 3/4 oz. of shot.
