Black Latex
August 26, 2013, 04:47:06 PM
Being a new call maker I am running into issues with inconsistency with latex!! I am sure many of you have fought this battle before! Any suggestions? Really struggling with black in particular! I would greatly appreciate any info on this issue! Thanks

There is alot of inconsistencies with latex. It doesn't take much to change them as well. The black latex seems to be very inconsistent. A few years ago I got some real good dark black latex that was great. The latest stuff is more grey than black and isn't as good as the other stuff. Everytime this latex changes I have to adjust my calls. Good luck.

The fact is that the manufacturing process involved in making latex is not precise enough to insure the consistency of the product for use as turkey call making material. Two pieces of latex cut out of the same sheet and stretched into a call frame at the same tension cannot be guaranteed to sound exactly the same,...and in fact, are very likely not going to.
The idea that a call manufacturer can produce calls, even under the most stringent of conditions and precision, that will sound the same from call to call, is a pipe dream. The latex material itself will not allow for it, even if every other factor in the call making process,...such as tension, reed spacing, and cutting,... is exactly the same.
I have said this before, and will say it again. Anybody that wants to be the very best mouth call user they can be should learn to make their own calls. That way, they can make lots of calls and use each one to find out what works best for themselves. Then they can sort through all of their calls and choose the ones which sound the best to them.
Buying the same call type from a manufacturer in hopes that it will sound just like the one they bought before, is a really good way to become extremely frustrated,...and empty your pockets during the process.

Thanks everyone!! I agree I am not a fan of the newer black latex (grey). I agree with building your own calls! That is exactly how I got into this business!! If anyone knows anyone that has any of the old black latex for sale let me know. I am currently experimenting with new combinations.....black latex happened to be on two calls in my line........

The Black latex you talk about was shinny jet black and there was white that was shiny really good stuff!!! Well it's gone the company that produced that latex is out of buisness and the black now is a grey but its consistent for me with my calls you might have to adjust in some form or fashion on your build and it can be done I wouldn't so much be worried about the latex but be worried about the non sticking tape!!!

For sure, tape is supposed to be fixed as well! I can say up to this point it seems to be better!! I will try some different stuff with the grey or switch to a different reed combination!! The other black did rock!

Worrying about latex is the least of my problems, in the past 3 years I've had meltdowns with tape, tape, latex, frames, tape, and more tape.
