Most call makers only condition a small portion of the striking surface if there is something about the sound board that they want you to see. A sticker, a picture, a fancy piece of wood etc. I condition about half the surface of most of calls that I hunt with. It doesn't affect the sound. On some calls, such as bead blasted, I will leave half as is and sand the other half to give different sounds.
