Between days of bad weather including a lot of wind, rain and actually some ice this Illinois turkey season has been awesome so far! Just over three weeks to go.
#1 - YOUTH SEASON BIRD DOWN - My nephew's first bird and one of the best turkey hunts I have ever been a part of. He killed this bird April 7th with a little single shot shotgun my Dad bought me when I was a kid. We really had to work for this one - We finally were able to slip in and get somewhere he was willing to play ball. No 2 year old here - This bad boy had a rope beard, hooked spurs and weighed almost 23lbs
#2 and #3 - Called in these 2 year olds through an icey rain April 19th for my good friend and his little brother. They came in on a rope gobbling the whole way and put on a heck of a show. Cool thing is this was a double with the same gun. Once little brother gave the first one a dirt nap - it was big brothers turn and quick enough 2 flopping birds and plenty of high fives and pictures.
#4 - IN AND OUT - Best bird of the year so far and got to share it with my little brother. We ventured out on a new piece of property we have never hunted before and by ten minutes after six we had this hog over our shouders. Double Beard 11 1/8", 3" and 1", 1 1/8" spurs, 24lbs! This bird was all alone on a ridge-top near a field. Becuase of the lack of scouting on this new property we had no idea he was even there - until be gobbled and nearly blew our hats off. He came off the limb and I could Feel him land behind us. He wasted no time making it to my jake decoy and showed him who was boss. That was the last fight he ever got in.
STAY TUNED!!!
