Soggy in Kansas

This wet weather in northeast Kansas is getting to me...almost 4 inches of rain in last two days.  It has been dry and we need to the rain but it sure isn't the greatest weather for turkey hunting...(at least not for the hunter anyway).  Supposed to be 27 degrees tonight.   I was fortunate enough to call in and  harvest a nice 23 lb , 10" beard tom on opening morning last week but henned up toms and cold weather have made it tough since.

I'll be out there this weekend hitting it hard...supposed to be just cloudy and partly cloudy...I'll take that.

It's been a soaker in Iowa, too.  I got hailed on yesterday.

Is it just me or does anyone else dislike hunting turkeys in rain?  Sounds silly but I really enjoy seeing a big ole tom strutted out with the feathers shining in the sun!  And the photos after harvest always look pitiful,  like a drowned rat!

I understand if you plan a trip to another state or take vacation days and you just have to go hunt those days...and I do that if I need to...but I sure like the sun!

Light rain is OK if I remember my rain gear, but these downpours and high winds are just nasty.  It shuts everything down.  HOWEVER, I was lucky enough to strike a bird inside of a 10-minute window between downpours yesterday, and he came in fired up fast!  He got dead.  The hens stayed in the trees.  I didn't get any good pictures, because I was trying to keep my camera dry.  I was supposed to hunt in Missouri this morning, but my clothes and gear are still drying out in the garage.

Thats great on your bird.   I set up on some Saturday morning...about 14 hens and 3 toms...had two brilliant plans in mind...Plan A set up on south side of field about 60 yards from roost...no decoys.  Plan B set up about 100 yards from roost, use decoys, call a little after flydown...thought maybe I could convince one of the toms to break away and come my way.

Well...plan A would have been murder...the three toms flew down early right in front of the tree I was going to sit by...20 yards!   Needless to say I picked Plan B...the hens stayed in the trees about an hour after the toms flew down.   It was great to see the toms gobbling their heads off at those hens trying to get them to fly down I guess.  I got the toms at different times to within about 60 yards, never closer.  Hens finally flew down to middle of field and off they went opposite direction....my buddy drove by on his way home from hunting...texted me the three toms were standing by my pickup!  Gotta love it!

LOL!  That's awesome!  A flock had my truck surrounded Monday afternoon, too.  I had to wait about 300 yards across the field for them to disperse.  I ate up all my snacks, and lunch was in the truck.  I was starving.
