Well this is my obsession and it is getting bad. I have been buying turkey calls like crazy. I know a lot of guys only have a few and others have zillions. I have this thing for walnut. I just like the way it looks. So as of late I have bought about 10 mouth calls some from guys on the forum and others from Bully's game calls. A friend recommended them to me and his mouth calls sound great and are pretty easy to run. I also picked up a nice walnut box call that sounds awesome. And my recent purchase was a Birdseye maple tube call from pappy. Now I just need to get a slate. I know in reality some guys stuck with just mouth or box or slate but I want to have a lol bit of everything. Mainly cause I know there isn't one call for everything. So I know zero about slate/pot calls. so some one educate me please.

Slate is going to be a more easier surface to run consistently,  there is aluminum, crystal, glass, bronzed glass, copper, ceramic and a few others,  if you don't own a slate call I would definately get one.  I own 20-30 custom slate surfaced calls and I know I sound like a broken record but the best deal and sounding slate in my opinion is Lonnie Sneeds Hot Hen Slate.  It is $30 shipped and is all turkey.  I have paid up to $70 for a slate and it didn't sound close to the hot hen.  Welcome to the addiction,  you will eventually get some in every surface,  I said a few months ago I was going to slow down and about 10 pots later I am still going.  Scoot

As a call maker, I can say that not all slates are going to sound alike or good for that matter, but Lonnie's calls are excellent in quality and sound and for the price you will not find a better sounding caller....

Lol so slate seems to be the best an easiest to run. This is going to sound bad but I think, from a collector stand point, that the actually pot design itself would more persuade me to buy than the actual call surface. I am a sucker for unique wood designs.

You want to kill a gobbler or look at a call? I presently have close to 150 pot calls. Yes, 150. I have some I paid well over $100/each and some that are so pretty they almost hurt your eyes to look at. But I carry a Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen slate in my vest when I hunt. Lots of gobblers have gone on to their happy hunting ground because of it.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field

I really enjoy pot and peg calls. tons of fun. keep in mind if your in an area like me its really damp in the woods in the morning and i cannot get a slate to run worth 2cents until the afternoon. for that reason I run an aluminum or copper call. I love the rasp of copper.

You might look at Genes Turkey Calls (Blacky) he sells a slate and glass that sound good for $25 each delivered. Lonnies Hot Hen for $30 is a great call. Hooks Assassin Aluminum is sometimes on sale for $29 plus shipping. The Hooks Bronzed glass for $44.95 sounds great. I love good looking wood but if a call looks good but sounds average I get rid of it. If it is ugly but sounds good I put it in my vest. The turkey won't care what it looks like and neither will you when he is answering you and on his way in. Good luck with your choices.

I have a little over 200 calls, boxes, pot calls and tubes. I have pretty calls and "ugly" calls that all will call up a turkey. I do not have any calls that I would not hunt with. One day soon when I get my hands on a Cost box, guess where it is going, in the woods to kill a turkey. That is what a call is made for. But I love to "gather" turkey calls, it is awesome. Whatever calls you decide on remember this "ugly" or not so pretty calls, most of the time will sound awesome and that is what is important!!!
Blessed are the peacemakers for they are the children of God.
