New Gun

I'm in the market for a new gun for turkey and duck hunting. Looks like the Mossberg 835 combo fits the bill perfect. Any pros and/or cons? I can get one for 399 plus tax.

It's hard to beat the 835 for performance and value. If you choose a gun with at least a 26" barrel it should work quite well for waterfowl and turkeys. As you know, waterfowl loads use a slower burning powder and 26" is about the shortest barrel recommended for those loads.

The only real downside to the 835 is that it does kick but I'm sure you already knew that. You may want to consider a Limbsaver slip on pad or replacement pad to help with that.

I like the .775 over-bored barrels but I always "deep clean" them before taking them to the range. Even though the 835 has a 3.5" chamber, I normally use 3" shells, even for waterfowl. I find that they do the job and lessen recoil enough to allow me to get back on target and get off a second shot.

Lastly, the 835 is a proven gun that gives you many options. It was designed for waterfowl but quickly picked-up by turkey hunters. It's a winner.

Before yo buy one you need to shoot one. Most of the people I have let shoot mine decide NOT to buy one. It kills on one end and destroys on the other.  Several magazines have done test on the 835 and its recoil.

It comes with a 24" turkey barrel and a 28" waterfowl barrel...........

That would be hard to beat. You'll be able to see just how both of those barrels pattern.

I would go for it if it feels good in your hands and to your shoulder. I like the way the new Mossbergs feel better than most other guns out there. The patterns will be there with both barrels with the correct choke and load for each situation.

Go with a 870 or 1187. Made better than a mossberg. In my opinion.

yeah the 835 kicks a little more but it will also throw equal or better patterns than those guns you will have $700 to $1000 in

Its hard to beat a 835 -  get a good aftermarket pad , 835's  pack a whollop , I wish I still had mine

clean the bore out with a solvent ,then make sure the more has no oil residue in it  and you will shoot tighter patterns

Go with a 870 or 1187. Made better than a mossberg. In my opinion.
