I was goin through some pictures of my birds and came across this one. I killed this bird in 2011. I've never mounted a turkey, thought about mountin 4 or 5 but always just ended up cuttin their spurs off and puttin em on my necklace. I still regret not mounting that turkey.

If I ever get another one 1 1/4 or better I'm gona mount it. I lost one hunting spot that had the genetics.

Well that one there was my longest spurred bird I ever killed. One spur was 1 5/8 and the other was 1 17/32. I talked to a taxidermist that said he could take the spur caps off and glue em on another bird, and take the bird from him and sew it in. He said you'd never be able to tell, I've considered it but it still wouldn't be the same turkey. That bird had 3 tail feathers shot into, so he may not have made the prettiest mount anyway, lol, but man he was big.

That is a good bird.  I personally don't like the thought of mounting spurs and beards or horns on another cape for the same reason you said, it's not the same animal.

I have thought about mounting a few myself.  I'm waiting for a good combination of beard and spurs.  I killed a 10" bearded bird but his spurs weren't quite an inch.  I killed another bird that had over 1 1/4" spurs, but the beard wasn't quite 9".  I'd like to get one with those same spurs and an 11" or so beard and he'd be headed to the taxidermist for sure.

I know a lot of guys like big spurs, and I like spurs just as much as the next guy, but a big ol' 11 or 12 inch rope is just as exciting to me.

That's been my prob nj. I've killed long spurs with short beard, short spurs with long beard. Can't seem to find one that has both. I've stuck 3 in the freezer but ended up not mounting. Got one in there now with a thick 10" beard and 1 3/8 spurs. Still can't decide. Killed one with 1 9/16 spur but he had the thinnest 9.5 beard I've seen.

I'd probably mount that 10" and 1 3/8" bird.

2011 was a good year for me. I only killed 4 but two real good ones. The hooks on the bottom of the pic are from the bird at the top of the page, the others were from a bird a killed a week before at LBL Tennessee side. I wanted to mount both of em standin  on a limb beside each other, but  u see em on my necklace. Im still kickin myself in the butt on that one That lbl bird had a thick 11" rope too. Prolly never have another year where I kill 2 like that.

You never know.  That's part of what keeps us coming back.

Oh, and congrats on the turkey birds.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!
