I just recently got a 28" barrel for my REM 870 and was wondering what chokes some were getting good patterns out of this longer barrel with. I have a Remington SF rated for Hevi-Shot and have Fed Heavyweight #7's. My concern is that with this set up the pattern may be too tight.
Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Thanks

Eric , I have 26 inch barrel . With Trulock .575 and HW 7 I get about 150 in the 10 at 40 .

I don't think your patterns will be too tight at all. The very best patterns that I've seen with that length barrel (the one that I shoot) are with those shells and the SSX but your SF may work as well.

Good luck.

Well, I took a much needed day off Friday and took my 870 out to pattern it to see what we got.
Man was I excited with the results. Used Fed Heavyweight #7's 1 1/2 oz load with a Rem SF choke rated for Hevi-Shot and man was I impressed. I will post some pics and numbers either tonight or tomorrow. I have a killer :z-guntootsmiley:

REM put out one for Hevi-Shot and there is one that only is rated for lead.
If I am not mistaken, the constriction on the one rated for lead is a little tighter than the Hevi-Shot rated choke. I had that one but gave it to one of our team members for his 20ga after I bought the one for Hevi-Shot. Picks of my pattern will come tonight.

Did you post pics of your 20ga pattern's? I never saw them is why I'm asking. I have the same gun that I'm gonna be patterning with HW7's and wanted to see what your gun did for numbers.

Thanks Gerri

I too have this gun and run the SSX with H-13 7s.  I have posted a picture of my pattern before, but I did 180 in a 10" at 40.  I strongly recommend the SSX if you're leaning towards H-13s.
