I'd like some help

I am new to the forum and new to turkey hunting. This Spring I'll be taking a shot at some gobblers in North Texas after some Rio's. As I am building a Turkey gun, I'm starting with an older Rem 1100 12g Mag. It has a full choke on the barrel. I am also planning on dipping in a week or so. One thing I haven't decided upon is what type of optics to with. Looks like, to me, there are 4 options: tact scope(Gobble Dot), scope(Nikon), red-dot(Burris FFII or III), holographic(EOTech). This also seems to be the order of price as well.
I've read some before joining the forum and now, after joining. Any assistance in improving my understanding would be appreciated.

I used a FFII the last two seasons and just put a new FFIII on for this season. I love them, no problems so far.

The Fastfire is a fine sight....I have 2 of them, but you would get great service out of the TruGlo Gobble stopper red dot with the integrated saddle mount.  I have one on my 11-87 and it has served me well for a while before going the 20 gauge route and using Fastfire.

With that integrated mount there is no gunsmithing needed....just slap it on get some field loads to sight it in, check your zero with a turkey load and go huntin!!

Another vote for the FFIII! Alot of sight for not alot of money. Mine was a breeze to dial in, and the 8 MOA dot is perfect for gobbler hunting.
Best of luck in your choice, but as soon as I can afford a new sight for my sons gun, it will be an FFIII.

If you are just starting to turkey hunt, you may want to wait about the scope.

Just because I like a red dot/scope to turkey hunt with, does not mean you will.

There have been many turkeys killed with open sights.

I'd wait and see how your gun patterns, and how tight the pattern is, before determining if you want optics.

If you know you are going to maintain your shots to 20-25 yards, with a slightly open pattern, you might not want the optics.


If your hunting 40 yards with a tight pattern, then yes, optics will help you know where your center of pattern will be, especially when you aren't able to keep your head down on the stock.

I have used no optics, scopes, red dots, and holographic.

I have come to like the Fast fire and EoTech, the best for what I shoot. In my opinion, you get what you pay for, in optics. One failure, at any time, and having to set up and re do optics, is a pain in the rear, and time away from hunting.

If you don't like turkey hunting, selling quality stuff, is easier than selling junk. Just my opinion, take it for what it is, my opinion.

Something else to consider is customer service. I haven't had to use EoTechs customer service, or Burris, but here is the representation of Burris, which has been 1st class:

I'll give you an inexpensive option! Go to Cabela's website or a catalog and look up a B-Square mount for your 1100! they had a camo combo with a lower power scope! the whole combo is around $125 including shipping! it"s a solid setup at a reasonable price!

Found a couple of low-risk, high-reward deals on a speedbead and a FFIII. Speedbead has been fitted for my stock and waiting on the FFIII!
I'm not crazy about the hollow Remington Mossy Oak stock though. Hmm. I got it for a good price, but now I'm wondering about whether or not I can fill it with some weight without messing up the equally unbalanced, balance.

Burris FF's are the cat's meow. Scopes are good too, but there is the risk of getting popped in the eye. That's my only drawback to them.
