I just read where there have been 3 separate instances in one VA county where turkey dogs were attacked by coyotes while hunting.
Makes me hesitant to take our 14 week old turkey dog pup in the woods for training runs.

I was out in Colorado visiting a friend, I had my 90 lb lab with me and I found a place in Denver by the motel that was a large field by a school. I let Buck out and he was running around I saw a coyote about 100 yds away, Buck saw him about the same time and ran towards him thinking he was another dog.  Buck got up to him and started to sniff him like dogs do and the coyote bit him, Buck never ran so fast in his life yelpping towards me, he couldn't understand why that little dog bit him.  I almost fell laughing, I understand the fear with a small puppy or dog.

Turkey dogs?
Sounds like something you would find on the cold cut aisle at the grocery store.   ;D

I didn't realize people hunted turkeys with dogs.

Thanks for posting those links Barry. That is real neat stuff.
Jakes are like scotch. They are not worth a darn until they age.

Here in the northeast coyotes dine on dogs and cats all the time..I've had many friends who tell me their outdoor cats are disappearing constantly and even some house dogs that are let out come up missing right in their yards. I've heard lots of rabbit hunters beagles disappearing also. A local butcher shop operator recently asked me to stop killing all the coyotes with our hounds because his shop cats are overpopulating with nothing dining on them...go figure!!

CB on the run

Twice over the years I caught a coyote watching my dog while in the fall turkey woods.  The first was dusted with a load of 6's but I never touched the second as I had forgoten to change chokes and the IC and a handloaded 4X6 failed to draw blood(on fresh snow) @ 45 yards.

To the member that's never heard of a turkey dog, you're missing a great fall hunt.  We've used beagles and labs over the years to break the flock with great success.  Now Boykins and a special crossbred pointer mix lead the field.  Google Turkey Trot Acres.

Kill em all. The biologist say the coyotes dont hurt the turkey population like everyone thinks, that they keep the smaller predators that do affect turkeys in check.....I say bologne. Every place i hunt has less and less gobbling and less birds seen since coyotes have started showing up.
