Well, the Mississippi 2011 turkey season closed last night. If my intention was to have fun in the spring woods, I was wildly successful this year. I shot a 3 year old on public land the first week and was in on gobblers almost every day that I was in the woods. I even heard two different birds each gobble once yesterday morning on public land. I had the chance to hunt with Surehuntsalot and had frustrating fun with his problem children. My padawan turkey student stepped up to the plate this year and absolutely knocked one out of the park. He called up and killed a monster Tom for the first time on his own and I am very proud of him. I missed a 2 year old at point blank range while laying on my belly in a gravel road. I missed a giant bird in Arkansas and still don't know what happened. I was busted by the house dog, caught looking the wrong direction as a huge old bird strolled within 13 yards of me, was disrespected over and over and can say without a moments hesitation that I absolutely had a ball!

To our team mates in the northern tier states, your southern brethren respectfully hand the mantel of the 2011 turkey season over to you knowing that you will enjoy every moment that you are able to have in the woods chasing this arrogantly wonderful game bird. Please remember to post not only your scoring photos, but also the stories of the hunt so that we can follow along with you through your pursuits.

Good luck to everyone still hunting and stay safe!

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.
