 Hey there,
this morning i ended up calling in a jake as well as a big tom that was strutting and coming in to my hen and strutter decoy. at 10am as these guys were moving in to my setup they hungup on the strutter and the jake turned and started leaving and the longbeard started to follow. i midjudged the yardage and pulled the trigger thinking he was closer then he was. I missed, what do i do now? can i hunt these birds tomorow with maybe a different decoy setup and different calls? i know turkeys seem to forget about things such as being busted and scared in short time but ive never missed a bird that i want to hunt the next day.. what tactic would you try for hunting these birds again or am i out of luck and should look for other birds?

you had a full strut decoy out?

Yes i had a bmobile with jake fan and a hen.

i agree with zach.  I'd change the set up to a single hen.  Doesn't sound like he came all the way into the decoys, so not sure how agressive he is and if an aggressive jake pose would produce a different response.  I think the fan may make the difference though and the jake may work.  Good luck on whatever you choose.

do you have to hunt them tomorrow or can you let it lay a few days. Do you think he was hit at all. how far was the shot. If you think any pellets hit him he may be shy if it was just noise no affect.

Late response, but if you didn't hit the bird then I would hunt the bird the next day and leave the decoys home.  Also, set up in different area.  It doesn't have to be that far away, just don't sit under the same tree.  Hope it all worked out for ya.
