How's things looking in KS?
April 14, 2012, 10:07:03 PM
I'm trying to get off to get to KS at the end of this week. How's the birds doing there? I'll be northeast of Wichita. The early spring has things really green and lots of foliage in central AR right now. I haven't been to KS in years but have found some land I can hunt. Never seen the place, but thinking about heading up there if I can get off work.
Anyhow, are the birds ready?

Depends on the place you're hunting. One farm has wary birds that are call shy. Another one the birds came running. I see a lot of hens wandering around by themselves or in groups of two or three. They seem to be right on track with the calendar to me.

I'm headed there this Friday I'll be in the NE part and the guy I talked to last week said they're hened up pretty good so I'm hopping after a week and a half of that it should be better by this weekend.
Good luck!

Just talked to the guy I know down there today he said one day they gobble the next they don't if I could I hold off a week but I'll be in NE the next week so I have to go Friday, and make the best of it. If it was just me I wouldn't be concerned but my wife and daughter are going with and it's my daughters first turkey hunt so if they're hened up bad it coud be a long 4 days for my family.
Good luck when you do go!

Thanks Neal.
I'm still contemplating going myself. I've been on so many busted hunts the last few years, it's made me pessimistic.
I might wait and drive up Saturday and hunt Sunday thru Tuesday.

My buddy and I just returned home to Ohio from Kansas yesterday. Very successful trip. The turkeys were not henned up any of the days that we were there. Gobbling was pretty impressive 2 of the 4 days. One day was a complete bust with winds near 40-50 mph. Yesterday morning was a decent gobbling morning. It was the best year out of the past four that we have made the adventure to Kansas. We were in the NE region of the state. Both tagged out on classic hunts from beginning to end. Hope it continues for you! God bless!

Thanks for the report. I've never been to this area so I really don't know what to expect as for birds and terrain. Met the land owner over the phone only.
