Do jakes gobble on the roost?

Went in on roosted bird sat morning.Could hear someone on next property faintly calling before daylight.Bird sounded off every time.Two birds flew down shortly after daylight 40 yards from me but just out of sight down the ridge.I never called to them until they were on the ground They both would answer me.One left out down the ridge,I heard a hen clucking and she skirted the hillside and went straight to the other one.It was over then.I know a jakes gobble is supposed to sound inmature I don't have enough experience to tell the difference.These gobbles sure didn't sound inmature.I saw two jakes around 10:00 later that morning close to that area. Is it possible that was the birds i had roosted?Thanks for any help!

Jakes can and will gobble on the roost. I had 5 do it the other day.

A Jake will Gobble on the roost but you can tell the difference between a Jake and a mature gobbler. The Jake's just do not have that pronounced of a gobble and its not as complete as a mature Gobblers gobble. The Jake's that you seen later on in that same area were most likely Satellite birds looking to sneak a piece when the dominate gobbler in the area is not looking or busy. They will most of the time be silent in stealth mode not wanting to tip off the dominate gobbler that they are in the area trolling. But you will find that one that thinks he is tough and gobble. a lot of times when there is more than one Jake they will gobble there heads off and gang up on the dominant gobbler and run him off so they can get at the hen.

Not always true, in fact, very often not true. Although you will hear a lot of jakes with shorter, higher pitched, kind of pathetic sounding gobbles, it is not at all uncommon for them to sound just like a longbeard. I watched and listened to 4 jakes just this morning that had deep, full gobbles. I have heard countless jakes that had gobbles you would of swore were Toms.

Some Jakes can and will gobble just as strong as a longbeard. Here's one I video'd off my phone the other day.....I run into them daily, you have to be certain of your target.

Guys thanks for all the info!Big Gobbler hit it on the head about the two jakes I saw that morning They were definitely in stealth mode sneaking through the woods.Hopefuly the gobbles I heard that morning belong to mature longbeards.If not they still got me pumped up and excited!Thats what its all about any anyway!Thanks again for the replies and best of luck to everyone this season.  MG150

the jakes I run into up north in PA and NY usually dont have a very good gobble at all.. every now and then I'll see a super jake that can muster one decent one out but yes its possible

Those were what we call "Bull Jakes" here in Mississippi. You can not tell the difference until you see them!!!!

as you have heard they do and can, The hard part for me is to determine if its a Jake or Tom, I haven't been Turkey Hunting Long enough to tell yet, This will be my 3 rd season, and Killed my 1st Bird a Jake last year, that had 3 beards about 1.5 of an Inch, I was so pumped after the 1st season and only getting to go 2 times and learned everything I know about Turkey Hunting to reading on here and Books. I thought not to bad. I love this sport and wish I would of started alot earlier in my life, But not having a Dad, I took to the Outdoors on my own, and hunt deer with all 3 weapons to this day. and I have taken several deer in my life, My grandson ask me Granpaw how many deer have you killed I said I have no Idea, But love to introduce the youth to hunting. sorry Got of the topic some.

In my experience, jakes can be pretty vocal and yes, it can be tough to impossible to distinguish from mature birds at times. However, i've definitely seen and heard more jake gobbling and general rowdiness earlier in the season. Being immature, their testosterone levels subside much sooner than mature birds, that couples with the fact that they likely got tired of getting their clock cleaned every time they gobbled around a boss, likely is the reason they seem to quiet down alot as the season draws on. Their sneaky quiet demeanor in general responds better to softer, more subdued calling. If i'm cutting it up, i think they figure a big tom will be there soon enough and i call in very few when i'm aggressive. If i yelp, purr, scratch, and cluck softly, i often call in a few jakes that way. The only real concrete way to tell the difference is staring down the barrel at the bird that made the gobble.
