Sounboard or No Soundboard?

I'm a new member to the site and a beginning call maker.  I have made several calls with and without soundboards, the ones with sound more muffled than the ones without.  How much space should be between the surface material and the soundboard/and the soundboard and side of the call?  Is there big benefit to having a soundboard? Any help would be appreciated!
