Ever give up on a pot call?

The first turkey call I ever spent more than ten bucks on is a cody woodsman in slate.  I was really expecting great things from it.  I have tried every striker I own, and am starting to be convinced I got a bad one, or it's a bad design or something.  It sounds flat and squeaky with no resonance in every spot I have tried to play on the surface.

Is it me, or did I get a lemon?  Is there maybe some way to salvage it by doing something to the surface?  I have heard good things about Cody, and I don't really want to tarnish their reputation.  But I really have no use for it in my vest.  And I don't want to sell it for somebody else to deal with.

Ideas?  It's hard to describe the sound, but it just doesn't vibrate and sing, if that makes sense.  Thanks for listening.

Did you buy the call new or used? I would send it back and have it replaced. could be you just got a lemmon.

I got it new.  But I was new to turkey calling when I got it, so I didn't know better.  It's been a couple years.  I'm still no grand master, so I'm thinking it is possible I haven't figured out how to do the slate thing.  All of my other pot and peg calls are glass.  It sounds pretty good if I play it quietly.  I've been messing around with it,since I posted this and I have this laminate woodhaven striker that makes it sound pretty good, but only if hit very quietly.  Truth be told I'm starting to wish I hadn't even posted this.

Still kind of squeaky.  But it purrs well with that striker and that striker only if I cup it in my hand just right for the purrs.

DD, give it to a few of your hunting buddies and see if they can get it to play right.  may be a lemon

I think I have one of those too in the bowels of the turkey call cabinet,  did you try to recondition the surface?  I use emery cloth and just go in one direction then you may also rough up the striker tip just a little.  Nothing against Cody but I have noticed most production company just throw in whatever striker worked once and never look back.  I have purchased alot of different types of strikers and sometimes they can make a call I have forgotten about sound pretty good.

Try holding a lighter up to the surface be carefully not to touch t flame to the slate or leave it in one place to long it will get the moisture out of the slate after that rub a scotch btite pad on it blow the dust off and see if that helps. Slate will hold moisture and not sound right let us know how that works for u
