Glass/Slate over?

When a call is glass over whatever, what exactly does "whatever" do and why all the different types? Does it affect the sound that much?

Sorry if the question sounds dumb, but was curious about it.

The soundboard is the vocalization in the call. Depending on what you use depends on the sound you get out of the call. It mostly effects the sound of the rasp that's in it. Like a slate over glass would have a higher, sharper sounding rasp than a slate over slate would. The same with wood soundboards each wood type gives a different sound off it. It's endless to the different kind of sounds you can get out of a call.

Then the thickness as well as material used would affect it?

Yepp, you got it... The thickness of the playing surface and the diameter of the playing surface directly correlate to the sound of the call as well.

Ahhh... Re-read your lost post... Let me try that again... Yes the thickness of the soundboard and the material used for the soundboard will affect the sound... Like was mentioned before, a glass soundboard would have a higher pitched sound then say a slate or wood soundboard.

Thin glass = raspy/rattley?

Thick slate = cleaner/clearer?

Can't really help ya out on that one... All the slate and glass I use for soundboards is the same thickness... Maybe someone else can help ya out on that one... I know some guys use different thicknesses for their wood soundboards, maybe they can give ya some insight into that.

IMO thicker glass used for playing surfaces will be higher pitched in my pots. I havent found much difference using as the soundboards though. I have used alot of difference woods for soundboards and havent found a big/noticeable difference in sound. I have used soft woods like cedar and harder woods like osage without much difference. IMO I believe the way a pot is built or made makes and breaks calls more than wood and glass types.
