Finally Killed a bird!
March 27, 2012, 08:37:09 PM
Man, I thought I would go crazy the last 4 days! All 4 days since opening day I've heard at least 2 birds gobble. We've hunted about 4 different properties that we have permission on and man have they been gobbling.
Saturday I was soooo close but they didn't want to work right. Saturday afternoon we got on one with hens and across a creek and he wouldn't work. Sunday the temps dropped a little and we only heard 2 birds and they weren't talking a lot and we couldn't move in on them. Monday we hunted about 100 miles from our house and had one on roost about 50 yards. Guess what! He flew the other way. We sat for a couple hours there called in a hen and then figured we'd try another wheat field down the road. We didn't have any luck at all on those and by then it was about 2:00 and we had to be back monday night. My buddy said " I'm driving my truck back there where we were this morning and see if I see any" I told him to go ahead. Sure enough we get to about 50 yards where we were earlier and he runs off. I jumped out of the truck and hit the box pretty hard and he gobbled. We tried to sneak around on him and cut him off but he was long gone.
Well today I was really not wanting to get up at all! I was wore out! We talked to a guy around the house that had been hearing a bird gobble a lot and he told us we could come try to kill him. We get there and not a sound. Nothing at all! we sat there about 2 house and headed to get some breakfast. We have a piece of property we have killed a lot of deer on and My buddy said " lets just go try for 30 minutes. We'll drive around the back side and see if there is one strutting in any of the neighboring fields" Sure enough. He was there in a field. We headed back to our gate and threw our stuff on and took off to the back side of the property and sat up about 200 yards off our property line in a small field we have . He had hens with him in the field so I wasn't sure how this was going to work. We sat up, and the first call he gobbled. He sounded a little further away that I though he was. I waited a while and called again. He was even further! I decide to put out the box, pot call, and the mouth call and make him think there was a ton of turkeys in our field. I tried all of those and he was still a good distance away. My last resort I pulled out the Gobble call and gobbled about 4 times on the Haint. Man, I tell you what! He was at the end of the gun barrel within 3 minutes! he came up so fast I couldn't get him on film but I can tell you it feels good to get that first GA long beard under the belt! Maybe we'll get on another one in the morning! Congrats to all the folks that have busted one! I haven't been able to get on here the past couple days!

Congratulations on a great bird!
