Well I got a text yesterday from my brother that he received my new turkey gun. It took me about a month or so to decide on which gun I liked best but eventually decided that this one fit me the best. I ended up getting a Rem 870 SPS Shurshot Synthetic Turkey 3.5". I plan on shooting several different loads and 2 chokes initially to check patterns then polish the barrel and shoot them again to see which combo works best. Since turkey season is in full swing here I most likely will be hunting with my Maxus unless I get equal or better patterns before polishing the barrel.

Get you a pure gold, JH, or IC. I might would even consider trying the new PG .660 with some 6s or 7s. I would try the Mag Blends, might want a more open choke, or the Hevi 6s. THose both seem to put up great hunting patterns and are easier to find. Good Luck and congratulations on the new slayer!

Congratulations on your new gun. Best of luck with it and in the spring turkey season.
Thanks,

First Impressions:
Right out of the box the fit and finish were very good. The action was a little stiff but that will loosen up with time. First thing I did was remove the barrel and look through it in the sunlight. I didn't notice any tool marks, just some cosmoline or lube from the factory. When I got home I removed the barrel and ran a bore snake through it 2 times with some CLP and swabbed it dry. The barrel looks quite smooth but I will eventually polish it at a later date. I removed the trigger group, cleaned it with powder blast, lubed with CLP and reinstalled. I also cleaned and lubed the inside of the receiver.
My next step is to go do a little pattern testing with the factory choke and another choke I have before polishing the barrel and test again with the same loads/chokes.

I'm shooting Hevi #6 and a JH .660. Haven't tried the #7 yet but everyone says they work great too. Good luck with it.

Nice rig!!! Bet ur like a kid with a new bb gun!!! I would clean it with a very good solvent before shooting. When you think its clean, clean, clean: clean it again. It will stay cleaner and clean easier it you dont have that oil gunk burnt in the barrel.
Good Luck and shoot for the waddles!!!!!

I wish mine had a pistol grip stock like that.

Went out to pattern check the factory choke yesterday just for the heck of it. I brought along a box of 6 shot high brass duck and pheasent loads to shoot while I adjust the sight at 15 yards. POI was low and right from the POA so first I adjusted the windage and got it set. When I came to adjust the elevation I found that I needed an allen wrench to adjust it but didn't have one with me. I didn't have time to drive home and back so I just shot about 10 rounds through the gun from the bench. One thing I noticed starting with the first shot (maybe due to the sight being set at it's lowest position) was there was a heck of a lot of cheek slap for just 2-3/4" rounds. I'm glad I didn't shoot a 3.5" turkey load first because that would have hurt. After getting back home I adjusted the sight up on the ramp and shouldered it again. Now my cheekbone isn't pressed tight to the stock anymore while aiming so hopefully it will eliminate this problem the next time I go shoot it.
Overall the gun functioned flawlessly. The first couple of rounds were a little tight to eject but I have been shooting an auto the past few years and may not have pumped it hard enough and it may take a few rounds to wear all the parts in. I never did get to check any patterns yet but that will give me something to do later on in the year since my original plan was to buy the gun after the season was over. I'll just finish the season with my Maxus and then start working on this gun for next year.

I shot Remingtons for years....great guns that always worked for me.
I have, however, fallen in love with the Maxus for my turkey gun...it throws as good a pattern at 40 yds as I have ever seen.
I also am using better shells and a better tube than I did in my Remington days ... A friend of mine uses a Jelly head in his 870 with Hevi 13 6s and loves it.
Have fun with it!
