A friend and I are at the camp now. We scouted from about 10:30 till dark. I really didn't see much turkey sign riding the roads or walking around. We put out a half dozen cameras and some corn to see what deer we have left. We also pulled a couple deer stands. At about 4:30 we grabbed our turkey chairs and went to sit and listen. The wind was blowing, so my expections weren't high. We split up and went to different areas of the property. I went to a area I rarely fool with right on the property line. I was slipping down a road when I spotted a flock of hens. There were at least 25 of them feeding on the edge of a small creek. I slowly went to my knees when they fed into a dip. A few minutes latter I heard something walking right to me. 15 yards in front of out popped 4 long beards. The eased off to my left and roosted about 50 yards behind me.
My buddy didn't see any, but heard some fly up not far from where he was sitting. We're going to sit for a little while in the morning then go check on another piece of ground closer to the river.

Good to know you've got a some birds on radar. Im going to scout another piece of property tomorrow. Maybe i'll come back with good news.

Didn't see any birds Sunday, but heard a few hens around 0930. I did see a couple deer and a fox. Also, found a bunch of turkey tracks on roads in the cut over. We got plenty of cameras out on corn, so I should have a few pic's the next time I go.

It was cold and windy all weekend. All the fields we looked at had fresh deer sign and most had a few turkey tracks on Sunday.

One weird thing I noticed was we put out 5 big spin feeder in the middle of January. All the feeders had plenty deer track, but no turkey tracks around them. Whenever I put corn on the ground I usually get a few birds in it.

Sorry you did not get to see any more long beards.  It is always better to be out in the woods than in the indoors.  Hope to see some pictures from the cameras.

I had the day off, so to the camp to check cameras and look around. The birds were fired up this morning. 4 of them were gobbling and gobbling from 6:15 to 7:15. I ended up seeing a few tom's and a few hens. Everywhere I went today had turkey sign. It was killing me not to call to the birds, but no good can come of it this early. I don't even bring calls to the lease right now. If I did it would be to hard not to provoke a few gobbles. Here are some pics from the cameras. The dates and times are wrong on a few of them. I changed out batteries and never reset the camera.

3/2/12 - 3/3/12

Went up to do some more scouting this weekend. Found no less than 50 turkey droppings and a ton of scraching all over our main roads. All of the game cameras had gobblers on them. I'll post pic's later today. I had a friend of mine with me and he watched 25+ birds fly up Saturday evening within 100 yards of a ground blind we set up two weeks ago. Sunday morning we sat just to listen and both of us heard 5 or 6 different birds gobbling. They stayed fired up from 0550 to 0700, with fly down time being around 0615. This was the first weekend I went up and did not see a bird, but that doesn't matter cause they are there. We also put out another blind Sunday in a spot that I've killed in before. There should be no shortage of places to sit with the kids next weekend. I also saw 11 deer, but some were  in my wind before I could get a good look them. The ones I did see well were does.

From this past camera run.

Something in my gut tells me the one in which you can just see the fan is a GOOD bird.  Do not know why but just a gut feeling!

I've been out 3 times so far this week, heard 3 Mon. AM, nothing on Wed. AM, did find fresh scratching though, this morning heard one gobble one time, he was on my side of the road  ;D hopefully he will stay there.  Heard some hens making a racket on the roost and when I was driving home sure enough they were in the field I thought they were near.  The gobbler was roosted a little further back in the woods than they were, gonna go to the ridge above that field tomorrow morning to hopefully hear him again.  Still less than a month to go.

Report 3-15-12

I went out with my oldest boy (4 year old) this morning to listen for gobbling on a small tract of land I can hunt. We heard two different birds gobble this morning with the majority of the gobbling happening between 7:40 am and 8:00 am. It was a thrill to see my little boy hear a wild turkey gobble for the first time. He enjoyed it and can't wait to go back. I'm going to listen at another bigger tract of land in the morning and hopefully hear a few more birds. Can't wait for season.
