blast from ported tubes

I have a Moss 535, 20 inch barrel with ported the turkey choke tube that came with the gun. The time only i shot it in the woods (see pic at left), the blast sound caused my left ear to register a very 'tinny' sound for about 30 minutes afterward. i assume this was from ultra-loud sound exiting the left-side ports and reverberating off nearby trees. Trees to might right were further away. I noticed the same thing with a ported muzzle brake on a rifle this past deer season. Another turkey hunter with a Mossberg 500 tactical short barrel mentioned the same, tinny ringing in one or both ears with his shotgun. He too has a ported choke tube that came with his gun.

Would a ported choke tube on a 26" or 28" barrel do this as well? Could this be due solely to the shortness of the barrel?

I have sound amplifying, noise squelching ear muffs for this season.

anytime you add ports to a barrel or choke it WILL make it louder no way around it really. 20" barrel will prob be worse then a longer barrel but all will add to the loudness using ports.

As has already been mentioned, those short-barreled guns put the muzzle closer to your ears as do ports. The muzzle blast can be brutal.

We all really need to protect our hearing. That "tinny" sound is the effect of having the nerves in your ears jangled. It can lead to damage and a constant ringing in your ears, not a good thing.

A longer barrel will help reduce the sound blast effect, as you mentioned.
