Do chokes break in??

Just sitting here reading a thread on stardot vs colonial arms in the pattern area and it got me thinking Do chokes break in over time?  To me it would make since that they would but I dont know for sure anyone know sure if they do thanks.

I think they do seem to shoot better with some shots through the tube.  Having said that I do think a good shooting well made choke will show its promise from a good shooting load the very first shot through the tube more times than not.  Case in point was a Tru Glo SSX .670 in my Moss 835.  The very first shot through the new choke was 312 shot in the 10" at 40yds with the Hevi-13 3.5" 2.25oz #7 load.  This was on a cool 45 degree day too.

I just ordered a sum toy choke and he said to take it out and shoot 25 rounds of any kind of ammo through it before I did any pattern work with it.

They do brake in.  Well the ones with steps do. Can't  say about ported ones.  Now I tell folks to true gun in at 50 ft and by then it ready to shoot.    Take a new choke and pump  1/2 box or more of old junk shells out of it.  I know new barrels I will burn a box of shells just as fast as I can out  it before we start a test.

I thought my new 690 kicks 10 gauge choke was junk until i put about 10 rounds through it and its achieved what i was wanting to make it through the season it is still improving though

The wad stops.  They been in the target world for years. Alot of tricks that can be did with them.

Yup, I have a new rem870sm, polished barrel with a new ventilator .655. First 4-5 shots patterns were weak but they started to improve around 8-10 shots. 115 in a 10 @ 40 with HV Pb 6's.. still have a ways to go. Think I may go shoot a box through it before I run any more turkey loads through it.

shot good when i got the gun used, cleaned and polished. it shot just medium till run about 20 rounds thru it and swabbed it. went to getting better with each round.

It's funny I just seen this now, I just got done patterning my gun with a brand new Indian creek and was amazed.  The first pattern was horrible and then just kept getting better ... See my H13 6's post. I only shot 6 rounds wish I would have read this before and shot up a bunch of dove loads first

So we can say its probably better to get a used choke cheaper than to buy a new choke and have to worry about breaking it in. LOL

That has been my experience. All chokes seem to shoot better the more they are shot, just as my shotgun barrels seem to shoot better as they are shot more.

Some are excellent from the first shot and don't get a lot better but some start out a little slowly and only improve with use. I wish I could say the same for myself!
