Field Notes

How many folks, take notes or log their adventures afield hunting turkeys.  Whether it be fall or spring?  I keep notes of tactics and strategies.  What did and didnt work.  The weather conditions.  Phases of the breeding cylce etc.  It is amazing to run back through your notes and discover something that worked for a particular gobbler and apply that to a current bird.  I know even at 37  and hunting them since I was 11, my memory is not what it used to be.

There was a time I kept a log of all birds heard and where they were at what time with weather conditions while scouting and hunting. Now with two small children I barely find time to hunt.

I tired but I forget by the time I get the note pad out.  If I do make it to paper I lose the notepad.

I keep the hunt new each time out, no one forgets there first time.

I have been keeping a log for 10+ years for deer hunting but never for turkeys. I am going to start this season and see how it goes.

I have been keeping a log of all my hunts since 1983.  I am 58 now.  Helps to go back in time, and I write some articles at times and the notes help alot.  Its fun to keep them and maybe someday my children will appreciate them.

I keep a log with weather conditions, calls used, gobbles heard, what worked and what didn't. I think it's a great idea to be able to reflect on past seasons.

When my little guy was 6 and started hunting I got one going for him. Has all the days we spent on the road during his grandslam  that year even if we weren't hunting and just travelling. I keep pretty good notes with wind, temps, conditions and a paragraph or so of what we saw. One page has all of his harvest info. I'll keep it going for a few more years and then maybe give him a copy so he can continue. Of course mine is all on a pair of flash drives, not sure if in 10 years the kids will be using pencils or pens anymore.
