My wife scores her first deer, and on Public Land
October 29, 2011, 02:13:53 PM
My wife and I decided to go to Kisatchie, where I missed the other evening. We woke up about 4:30 and got the showers out the way. We drove the short couple of miles to the spot. We parked and got the rest of our gear on and began to make our way. Our gear consisted of our rifles, folding lawn chairs, and home made shooting bipods (switch cane, wire and electrical tape). I had my GPS so that I could find my way to the spot in the dark. Once we made it to the spot, we set up our chairs on opposite sides of a tree and settled in for the wait. We got their pretty early to make sure we could get our spot. About 10 minutes after we got settled we hear a deer coming toward us. Keep in mind it is pitch black still. I whisperd to my wife to go ahead and rack a shell. She was a little on the unquite side (accidental noise) and the deer walked away. About 30 minutes later the sun began to rise. We sat listening to the squirrels and crows. ABout 7:30 my wife leaned around the tree and asked what time it was. I gave her the time and we got quite again. I would guess around 8 my wife told me she was freezing. I handed her the Hot Hands I had brought for her. I had put mine in my pocket before leaving the car. She was shivering slightly. She asked if we could go back to the house. She told me "You might have broken me from hunting with this cold". I laughed and said she could go sit in the car if she wanted. She knew that ment she could go by her self back to the car if she wanted. About 8:25 we were both dozing off when we both heard some noise off to the right. Both of us were half asleep but I happened to look up when I realized it didnt sound like a squirrel hopping through the leaves. I poped my head up out of the turtle neck shirt and looked that direction. Immediately I saw the deer. I leaned forward (remember we are on opposite sides of the tree looking the same direction) and when she looked up she thought I was going to say it was just a squirrel. My eyes were probably the size of golf balls as I was loudly whispering "DEER, DEER, DEER". I said "Get your gun up"! She was getting ready. SHe was fumbling with the bipod trying to turn to the right. I said to just wait because it was going to walk directly infornt of us. I thought it was a doe, but when it was almost infront of us I saw antlers. I turned and said "BUCK, BUCK, BUCK". When he got infront of her I let out a "Meep". She could not get on him because of the sticks. She pulled her rifle off the sticks and shot. The deer buckled and ran to the left. She hit him hard. We watched him run about 40 yards and he stumbled. I knew at that point he was hit good. We watched him fall and expire. We were both shaking tremendously. I was jumping up and down and kissing her on the cheek. I was squeeling "You got a buck, you got a buck".
We walked over to the deer and the happiness ensued. Her shot placement was perfect. She took out half of the heart. We drug the deer back to the chairs and gathered the gear up. I told her to stay with the deer while I walked the gear back to the Deer Wagon and grabbed the deer leash. I walked back to her and the dragging began. It was a long walk back out (uphill) and both of us had to drag together. We finally made it to the road and left the deer there. We walked the 70 yards to the car and drove it up to the deer, loaded it in the trunk on the Disney Princess Table Cloth, and headed home.
AND IT WAS SHOT WITH A ............ 7MM-08, 139 gn Hornady SST
It was a very great morning!
