I was thinking of adding a red dot scope to my Benelli Nova. I am concerned though because a friend of mine did the same thing last year and missed an old Tom because he could not advance a shell. The Nova can be drilled and tapped by a gunsmith who is familiar with the procedure on that gun. It has a thick polymer receiver over a steel skeleton. The polymer must be drilled through and into the steel skeleton with is tapped for the base screws. The smith must use some longer screws to attach the base. Once this is done, the base is as solid as any other gun and maybe even more so.
Those saddle mounts can bind, as you've noted but if left too loose can also move making a scope pretty inaccurate and also wear the exterior of your receiver. A good drill and tap job is much more satisfactory in most cases.
Lastly, just make sure your gunsmith has done a few of these guns. You don't want yours to be his first Nova.
