I've sawn a few on a Jet 14" w/ riser kit. It works but it isn't ideal. Most smaller band saws can do this just fine as long as you aren't sawing logs all day every day. I don't use a sled or a holder. I tried making one and it didn't work that well and I'm too tight to buy a nice one
. If you can split the log with a wedge first to create a somewhat flat surface, you can square it on the bandsaw and then begin to saw 1" thick or thicker boards. I usually try to saw 1 1/4" boards, because my cuts aren't perfect and there will be some warping, twisting as the wood dries. Give this post a littel while longer, others with tons more experience will hopefully chime in.
Good Luck,
Chris
