Last Friday we finally got a break from the rain in SW Pa. A_Jabbo and I decided to get a prework hunt in before the holiday weekend. Boy did we have a good one. I've been seeing a longbeard on a farm we have permission to hunt 3 of the prior 4 days. That's enough to get the blood pumping. We knew we needed to be in the woods and we knew we were going to get soaked getting there through the thigh high hayfield and boy did we get soaked. As the sun came up we had a gobbler sounding off further down the valley but a hen roosted about 80 yards from us. We played the game slow not wanting to bust her and ended up calling 2 jakes to about 5 yards. After they worked off we had a good laugh about their antics and slid down the valley towards where we last heard the gobbler. At 7am a_Jabbo got him fired up and we made our move to get into position. No sooner did I sit down I spotted a longbeard working our direction. Slow and silent while his buddy behind him gobbled at everything. When in range I touched the trigger and watched the first bird fall. I grabbed him and walked back and met with A_Jabbo who hung back to call. As we sat there celebrating and reflecting on the season that second longbeard came in looking for the hen he had heard. He strutted, gobbled and walked away while we admired him. I got two busy boys which each have a tag left. Hopefully one of them want to take A_Jabbo and I hunting in all our free time.
