Got a little bit of intel from a property owner that there were some birds hanging out in an area I can hunt.  It's been raining since Monday, but was supposed to stop last night and my daughter and I decided to play a little hooky from school this morning to see if we could fill her last tag.  I didn't have high hopes, it was cloudy, muggy, wet, and late in the season, but we figured heck, why not try.
Mosquitos were HORRIBLE this morning, but we got set up and as expected, we didn't hear anything at what I would consider normal gobbling time.  About 7am, as we look like 2 air traffic controllers the way we were swatting at mosquitos, a bird gobbles and he's CLOSE, and as he gobbled, another bird out in front of us a good ways farter away gobbles.  Ok, we're in the game.  A few more gobbles a a few more minutes go by, and I'm expecting the closer bird to pop out in the field any minute now to my right, so I'm staring to the right.  At some point I turn back frontwards and there's a gobbler at about 65 yards standing at the field edge looking right at my 2 hen decoys, which are directly between him and us.  I tell my daughter "don't move".  After about 30 seconds he takes a few steps out into the field, and another gobbler follows him out.  They proceed to tip-toe our direction in what seemed like slow motion.  The back bird starts going in and out of strut, but they're shoulder to shoulder and coming, slowly but surely.  A few steps, stop, look, strut, repeat.  I'm thinking they're going to spot us any second, so my heart is about to beat out of my chest.  I just want them to get to 30 yards, and separate enough for a shot.  Finally, they get where I want them, and separate, and I whisper, "shoot the strutter", and boom, my daughter drops him hard.  It was one of the coolest hunts I've been on, watching them tiptoe across the field was beautiful.  Many hugs and high fives follow, and she's officially tagged out in VA with her 3rd great gobbler of the season.  We stop and have a celebratory breakfast together, and get home and changed and get her to school a mere 45 minutes late, lol.  I can't think of a better end to what has been my best and most memorable season ever.

Great story. Congratulations young huntress.

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.
