Kansas wildlife and parks has been scheduling informational meetings to discuss potentially banning deer baiting in the near future. One lawmakers started threatening the commission.

I think the game commissions reasons for the proposal are valid. There's bait bans in the counties here where cwd has been suspected. There's also data supporting the proposition that baiting can harm other species like turkey's. I wonder if that particular state rep is pissed because if baiting were banned he'd have to learn how to actually hunt??

One of the Reps charges $1000 a head per day minimum of 3 days plus trophy charges to shoot deer by his feeders and they are farmers. There's a lot of corn going on the ground to feed deer in many states and it adds up to a pretty good chunk of change.

Ahhhh! Makes sense now. And this is why I firmly believe there should be conflicts checks and ethics rules for all elected officials. They tend to profit from the laws they pass and agencies they oversee all too often.

I have never had the chance to bait deer since it's illegal in my state. I would gladly try it if it was allowed. Would be really nice for kids or to shoot a few does for the freezer.

Corn piles are good spots for killing does and especially good for killing does and young bucks when it's cold, but imo the big bucks tend to avoid them in the daylight with the exception of very early season. If you pattern one on a corn pile in the summer and your season comes in early enough like September 1 etc you have a chance of arrowing one over corn but it's a small window of time. Once they sense pressure they turn into vampires. Once acorns start dropping they'll leave the corn all together.

My gripe with corn piles is the disease factor and effect on turkeys.

Texas may lead the nation in baiting deer.  It's just the way things are done.  We also lead in private land ownership (97% of Texas is private land) and leasing land for hunting.  We kind of started it sadly.  Leases have contracts and insurance regulations that usually prevent still hunting.  So we use deer stands and bait.  These pineywoods are pretty thick, you wouldn't see many deer without bait.
I laugh at the westerners who frown on baiting when they can see for a mile in all directions where I can see maybe 40 yards.  And the midwesterners who frown on baiting but pay famers to hunt the corn fields and even cut paths through the huge ag fields.  They don't consider that baiting? 
Yes, a feeder will concentrate the deer in one smaller area, but a whole field of corn is indeed bait.  We Texans defintely bait, but there are reasons.  As for KS, they can choose their own path.
