I recently acquired another turkey smoker. Its the Mossy 835 with a 20" barrel. I've never owned a Mossy, so I was wondering which constriction patterns best out of the 835 in the 40 yrd range. I've noticed there is a big difference in constrictions between the Jellyhead and Indian Creek for the 835. Figured I'd get your opinions on it before I started burning money on bunch of chokes. Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Oh yeah, i'll be shooting Mag Blends.

First of all, congratulations on your new gun. I'm sure you'll have lots of recommendations for your 20" barrel. I have had more inquiries about the short barreled 835s than any other gun. It's certainly very handy but can be a challenge if you're looking for those high number/dense patterns that we hear about and see quite often.

Those guns were the real inspiration for my writing the article about "Cleaning a Shotgun Barrel" several years ago. I'd recommend that you start there. You may find that your particular gun with the Magnum Blend shells and your choke will throw great patterns or you may struggle just a bit to get those good patterns. I've found that it can really vary from gun to gun.

I get good patterns with the .670 SSX, the .670 Pure Gold and the .676 Hevi-13 chokes. Those are 3 different designs but all seem to deliver very similar patterns through my .775 bored Mossbergs, 835, 935 & SSi-ONE.

I hope that helps some.

Thanks,
Clark

I have the 835 but with a longer barrel and I shoot mag blend with a "Carlson's" M835 12 GA Extended Turkey - .690 const good forty yard numbers and they make the chokes for Environ metals that makes mag blend. It also works well with H13 # 6 and #7 shot. I only shoot 3" shells though. As a second thing it also handles the dead coyote loads and #4 lead buck shot well if you want to varmit hunt too.
Clark And Raspy have both spent time at the pattern board so there advice would weigh heavy on my decision making. You will like the gun, good luck and have fun.

I love the short bbl 835..got 2 of em.  Now, I don't shoot the mag blends,  but I have shot nitros and hevi 13 7s out of them with great results.  The mag blends are a nice load, but mostly 7s anyways..same as nitros..the 7 do the work..they are doing the killing.  Why not just shoot straight 7s?  This has been my way of thinking anyways.   I have shot allot of chokes through them with the best performers being Sumtoy and star dot.  The star dot is fairly hard to find though.  If you are interested in shooting the straight 7s the Sumtoy 675 is killer and for the blended nitros, the Sumtoy 698 put up mind blowing numbers.

Hope this helps.

Ok thanks guys. It definitely is giving me an idea of what I'm looking for. As for my decision on the Mag Blends, I'm just not sold on #7's. Aside from that, the main reason I went with the Blend was the velocity. I had wanted to try Heavy Shot for a while, but to be honest, I was shy of them due strictly to the 1000fps. To me the Blend was the best of both ends, I get at least some 5 shot in each load, as well as 200fps faster. Everybody has their own preference.

Yup u right bud.  The 7s just put up higher numbers and I just feel that I can put mire on target,..numbers will kills even if they go slower....BUT..I shoot tss so im nit even gonna hunt with them myself.  The blends will get it done for sure..im just a numbers person..that's all.  There is a thread a few down and the blends did really good.  They will be good no doubt.  Let us know how u decide to set it up and be sure to post pics!

Will do. Thanks for the help fellas.
