Kansas hunting tips

I have the opportunity to hunt some private land in Kansas this year. Northwest area. Any tips other than the creeks. Snakes this time of year? Aluminum slates, box calls, I'm sure the wind is always blowing. Decoys, or just get in front of them? Your experiences would be much appreciated.

Be prepared for about any type weather.  Hunted northern KS twice and got run out by bad weather both times.  One time was heavy rain with super high winds and the other was a blizzard.  They closed the interstate after we got out.

Be mindful of the roads. Many, if not most, will quickly become practically impassable with even minor rainfall.

This is will be my 14th or 15th year hunting Kansas and the weather changes all the time. Plan accordingly. Wind always blows in Kansas.  Individual who commented on the roads is absolutely correct.  If it rains do not go on the unimproved roads or you may get stuck and need a farmer to pull you out. That's not good.  All the dirt roads are marked accordingly. I just walk further.  I can't wait until it's time to hunt.  Enjoy your trip.  The folks in Kansas are excellent and friendly and I have many friends in Kansas.  I have helped burn the CRP fields, round up cattle, etc. on the ranches.

This year look for water. Extreme drought out there. It will be windy so plan accordingly. Dont park on dry grass, it doesnt take much to start a fire. Be ready for -10 degrees or 80 degrees. They are right about the roads. I distinctly remember sliding backwards going up a hill with all 4 tires spinning. Enjoy it as it is one of the few areas in the state with halfway good turkey numbers. Next year it goes to 1 bird.

The dirt roads are no joke.  If it has been raining, or if there's ANY chance of rain, park where the gravel ends and walk.

I've never seen as many ticks in my life as I did when I was in Kansas in 2011. I can't tell you how many I pulled off of me. This was northeast Kansas tho. So hopefully northwest won't be as bad. But get some Sawyers and spray that tick spray.

 I have not hunted Kansas, I have hunted Western and North West Oklahoma. Being an Eastern native I would say the best advice I could give is Trees and Wind.

If there are trees there is water and turkeys. The Kansas turkeys live there 24-7-365. The wind does not bother them as much as it does you. If you roll out and it's blowing 40mph go out after them.

At home I would turn around and go back to bed! But, if driving 1300+ miles I am hunting!

Find the local steakhouse and enjoy a good steak. Not a chain restaurant..
