Saturday was opening day in Pa. and I for one was just happy to be in the woods let alone hunting!
Recent surgeries don't allow me to drive, pick up anything over 5 lbs. or do much of anything to tell the truth. With that being said, I've been down in the dumps for the past few months not knowing what my hunting status would be or if I could even shoot a 12 or 20 gauge.
My son surprised me with a Stevens Mod. 301 410 with a Holosun Red Dot and a Jebs XX full choke. He patterned it for me while I watched not wanting to maybe rip all my stitches out and have a do over medical procedure.
At 6:00 AM we had 4 or 5 turkeys feeding off each other's gobbles from various locations and distances', but one was close. He was first spotted about 80 yards from our location working his way towards us with possible bad intentions in mind.
At 30 yards he stopped, looking around, hesitant maybe noticing something he didn't like and turned to head in another direction. About then the 410 cut loose spewing TSS 9 shot in his direction. He snow plowed head first into the dirt with his butt flipping up over his head.
I shot that bird one armed with the 410 on a shooting stick.
End result 20 lb bird with 9 1/2" beard and almost 1" spurs.
40 minutes later my son shot one weighing in at 22 Lbs, with a 10 1/4" beard with 1 ΒΌ spurs!
Great day to be in the woods!
