Red dot protector or regular mount?

My current gun uses one of Sumtoy's protector mounts. I am trying to figure out if I want another protector mount on my new gun or just a regular mount.

For those who don't use a protector, have you ever been concerned with banging your sight or regretted not having a protector on it?

This is not to take away from your post, but i just bought my first Burris Fastfire 3 and I'm using the pictinnny mount with mine and i order a protector, that William suggested from Warbird Turkey Calls he makes one that goes in between the sight and base of the pictinny mount and he makes it wide enough that you can still use the dust cover on the red dot.. In my opinion i just think it's good insurance to have the protector.. But I've seen other not use it also.. IMO....I think if i were going to do a lot of running and gunning and traveling during season i would buy the protector ...

I have both and like the Sumtoy protector mount that is sitting directly on the receiver. Still allows room for a dream plastics cover to protect it from dust, water, etc that the mount can't.

I like the idea of a protector when it comes to fastfires and venoms... I ordered a warbird protector to mount with my burris. Ive always thought the warbird protectors look sweet too. The problem with the warbird protector is that it completely covers the 4 posts that the fastfire is supposed to sit in. So with the warbird protector, the only thing holding the fastfire and protector to the base is 2 screws. You have 2 points of contact between the red dot, protector and base instead of 6. And your adding to the stress to those 2 screws because the 2 screws are also holding the protector which weighs more than the sight. Poor design IMO.2 points of contact holding double the weight vs 6 points of contact, you crunch the numbers....Theres a lot of different bases/protectors for ff3 style sights on the market nowadays and they all incorporate 4 posts and 2 screws to secure the sight for a reason...Your adding durability to a lifetime warranty sight while sacrificing mount stability/strength. The guy who makes them says that the 2 screws are "enough" and i wouldnt have any problems.... All he has to do is incorporate 4 posts into his base and bingo, problem solved... I would recommend the Burris protector picatinny mount.

No protector for me. I'm very cautious with my killing tools, if I need a protector I'm not handling them with the care I should.

While the Burris FF sights are great, they are lightly constructed and will not take kindly to impacts around the glass frame. So a protector is a great piece of mind if you happen to slip and fall at o'dark:30

Hunt the timbered ridges, so the FF3 has a protector. Countless times I've been glad its there after a hard fall.

Benefits far outweigh the small increase in height off the receiver.

I take a different one or find one.   This the only one I had on this computer.
