I found a gem for those turkey hunters looking for real hunting stories to glean turkey hunting wisdom from. A turkey hunter who has hunted with a list of greats who passed on to him some pearls of calling and hunting. His name is Larry Proffit and the book is 'Letters to my Grandsons'. Every time I pick it up I find something I missed. He has calls from Zach Farmer and hunted with him. Calls from Richard Parker, hunted with Dwain Bland, to name a few. This guy met all these people and spoke with them about turkey hunting and what calls they made with their callers. A real good book. When you start reading its hard to put down.
We wait all year, why not enjoy the longbeard coming in hunting for a hen, let 'em' in close !!!

Agree with your review of the book and the man!  Mr. Proffitt is a nice gentleman and is a lifelong student of the wild turkey.  One on my list of favorite reads.

After doing some research I think its the same Mr. Proffitt.  I'm definitely going to have to order his book.  Thanks for the heads up :icon_thumright:

Guesswho it is the same Mr Proffitt. He lives about a hour from me, I meet him in Unicoi a few years ago and bought his book. It's a great book and he's a great guy you'll enjoy reading it.

I have heard a lot about his book, always good and have been meaning to add it to my collection myself.

I got to meet Mr. Larry at the convention a few years ago. I bought a book from him and he signed it for me. Unfortunately I still haven't read it yet. I need to get caught up on my reading.

I was just thinking, doesn't he have another book titled something like "More letters to my Grandsons"? I could be wrong, I am pretty tired right now.

Who is selling Mr. Proffitt's book?  I didn't see it on Amazon.

Thanks for the kind words my fellow turkey men. I just received another shipment of my books. They didn't go up as much as gasoline but the shipping did.  They are hard back with color which makes them higher . I have to get 35 each now which includes mailing. Tennessee residents please add tax. Your personal check or money order is fine with me. You can write or email me.  Address is:
Larry M Proffitt   607 Ridgefield RD   Elizabethton, Tn 37643    email is burgiedrugs@earthlink.net
I will have a table at Unicoi in  the hall with Jim Spencer. Will be selling books there and also at the NWTF Convention in Nashville. with Ralph Permar and Marlin Watkins at Booth #3 Tools of the Trade.
I Plan to bring some of Dwain Blands callers and his old 10 G Westley Richards double cap lock . His widow Stella gave me his Billy Buice  box call that he had been using for 8 years before he died. I only run a few yelps on it yearly to hear the pitch he tuned it to. He was for sure the real deal when it came to killing old gobblers fall and spring.  I included a picture of a gobbler he called to the gun in November. Long story of that day but just last year I heard on Lovett's tape and one of Denny Gulvas' videos a real young gobbler calling. He ran that Permar trumpet all day as we moved .  In the afternoon one gobbled. Out ran a whole drove of gobblers to the call. I knew then I had seen the elephant . I will simulate that call on my Zach caller at Unicoi.  I wax longwinded. Thanks for your interest. Larry Proffitt ,  Old Turkey Hunter

Awesome first post, Mr. Proffitt.  I'll be reaching out to you.

I agree, this book is an excellent read. I ordered and received it the beginning of the year. Once I began reading it I couldn't set it down. Any turkey hunter would enjoy this book, but would be of particular interest to those that enjoy hunting with Trumpets and wing bone calls. Mr. Proffitt has done an exceptional job with this book and I personally hope he writes another.

Larry Proffitt is as fine of a man as you will ever meet.  He's been a turkey hunting mentor to one of my best friends and hunting partners (who is actually mentioned in the book) for years and I have had the privilege of being a part of many a session.  Always enjoy hearing his stories and learning.

Mr. Proffitt was also just on the turkey hunter podcast and it was a great listen.
