I guess I don't understand your methodology. If you cut out that bone and trim all the meat and fat which you can there's  absolutely no reason for anything other than borax to set it up solid.

P.S. After removing the bone and flesh it will be limp. Borax both sides very well and pin it to a large piece of cardboard. Every couple days rub some more borax into it. Doesn't take it long to set very solid.
