At the appropriate time of year...  in addition to greatly helping the habitat for deer and turkeys, you will get an added benefit of very low tick survival.  Reduced ticks are not only great for people, but for all the animals too...

Turkey biologists have learned that growing season burns are substantially more beneficial to turkeys then winter burns.
Different growth comes back with different time of year burns.
Even if the occasional nest is lost during the growing season in the long run the turkwys will benefit.

If possible, controlled burns should be done prior to spring green up.  In my neck of the woods, this would be and is accomplished in January, February and March.  Your local forestry service will assist you with advice.  This accomplishes a couple of things, it will get rid of unwanted underbrush and forest floor debris and allow beneficial grasses, herbacious plants and young plants to feed the wildlife at initial green up.  Our Forestry service burns thousands of acres of National Forest land during these 3 months, which by the way is prior to nesting season and fawn drop.

I wondered why they moved the burns around here from February to early April.  Thanks for that info.
