Last day of the season. Had a family get together last night. To celebrate all the last few months birthdays.
Short story I offered to take my son in law for the last general season hunt.
As we walked into the spot I hunt, two different gobblers going off. One too close to my blind location, it was too light.... I'm sure we walked under his tree on the way in.
I could hear 3 different birds, so had high hopes of an early close out.
They were way different today than Thursday. 4 different times had gobblers come to within 50 yards. One time one came from behind and was so close I started to video, figuring I'd get the video of him coming into view. Next time he gobbled was going away. Really weird.
Anyway, after 4 come and leaves, I pulled the Jake decoy. And opened the back of the blind. Told Eric that somethings different today, and we may have to shoot a non committed bird. And that's what happened. Two gobblers topped out the little knoll behind us, one gobbler immediately turned and headed away. Second bird hesitated a bit. I called to stop him, and that worked. Eric literally one handed the .410 and put the gun out the back window.
35 yards and hardly a flop.
Nice way to close out the California season.
Two year old. 15 pounds 3/4" spurs.
