A buddy of mine and I are making our first trip to Nebraska in April. We have some ground secured to hunt for 4 days around the Broken Bow area, but we will be staying in North Platte for the first 3 days. I'm certainly not looking for anybody's hunting spots, but do you think the Wapiti WMA or the land around Jeffrey Lake WMA would be good places to start looking? Also, are there any places we should try to see while we're in the North Platte area? Thanks in advance for any info.

Lots of public ground in that area. Pretty good population of birds too.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

Check out Buffalo Bill's Ranch in North Platte.

You should be able to find birds about anywhere in that area. Don't feel like you have to stay by the Platte either, you can find turkeys about anywhere within a mile or so of decent trees to roost in. I think turkeys are the easiest species to get permission for in this state, so don't be afraid to knock on some doors if you see birds somewhere.

Once the birds start to leave the winter grounds along the rivers they scatter all over the plains, roost trees and ponds are key, cattle lots and an ag fields as well.

Those birds love to roost in dead cottonwoods!  Look like ornaments from a distance, we had a large dead cottonwood on a property, we could glass it from a road a couple miles out and know if they were there.

Yes, they like the cottonwoods:
