Makayla's rabbits
February 17, 2021, 10:02:37 PM
My daughter was asking if she could shoot a squirrel and attempt to tan the hide. The last day of season was 1-31. We went out that last day but never saw a squirrel. Yesterday I realized the rabbit season goes through the end of February. So today we made an attempt at rabbit hunting. Makayla went two for two. She shot a 20ga turkey gun with 8 shot. The hides are covered in thick salt layer and meat is soaking in salt water. We are going attempt turn the hides in to little rugs and the meat is going to get rolled in flour, fried in butter, and placed on a biscuit with gravy. I've not eaten a rabbit in many many years.

Great job Makayla, how did she do when it came time to gut them? That's a tough hunt with out Beagles. Miss that, been a long time. Thanks for sharing.

She was fine with cleaning them. She wore gloves though. They do have a bit of a smell. All my kids have eaten all the game we have shot or caught from day one. The processing of the animals is as normal to them as it would be all us. They have seen and participated in it. We put the hides up high on shelf in the garage last night. this morning Makayla's kitten had somehow gotten up there and was attempting to bring one of them in the house. As much as she loves that kitten I thought it would be skinned as upset as she was. Those hides are special to her. I sure hope they turn out. Sometimes those little physical trophies keep the memories real a long time.

Nice! Sounds like being Makayla's backup shooter would be an easy job. Well done young lady

Congratulations to the young lady. I used to clean them out then put the whole thing in a thing of spaghetti sauce until meat was falling off the bones, better than chicken cacciatore!

Congrats to her. Question for you. What do you mean rugs? They need to be split and fleshed. Than if you somehow don't tan them they'll only be dry rawhide and get hard and unpliable. After tanning if you chose that you need to break them to soften. It's not just throwing salt on. Why not look into a garment tan? That's pretty cheap. You still need to split and have it sorta clean though
