Evening brethren,

A friend and I are heading to eastern Wyoming the week of April 20 (opening week).

Should we be prepared for snow still on the ground?

Are we getting there too early?

Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks friends

It is a possibility Cheyenne gets snow a couple days of snow in April. I spent some time out there a few years back.

We were in the Black Hills SD late May 2019. 14" to 18" of snow on the ground made it pretty tough.   Obviously not the norm but y'all need to be prepared for some snow.

Definitely be prepared for snow and for very rapid changes in the weather. I haven't hunted there in years, but was there years ago. On May 8th had a big snow dump and then turned very cold. Be prepared for anything. Have had the same thing happen just north in Carter county MT. It had snowed a bunch in early May. It then turned warm and the roads turned to some very slippery gumbo. Definitely have 4x4. My son lives in western WY, but hunted the Black Hills of WY the opening weekend two years ago and it was fine. If I were you I would personally go later than 4/20, but even later be prepared for anything and it can change in hours.

Like other have said be prepared for snow. And I say that because there is a lot of area your can Hunt in the WY black hills. That is the time I am always trying to hunt there. If we tag out early in SD we jump to WY side to try the same first part of season. And there have been may times had to hunt in foot hills because the forest roads on the north side had two much snow on them to get in very far. And not all bad just means have to work harder, because thats where everones else has to hunt also. But then it also means a lot of the turkey are still dispersing out of there winter flocks off the ranches and farms from down low. But if you are lucky to hit it just right when there moving up, it is a blast. But then I live in MN so having snow is no big deal, and love seeing strut marks in the snow.

I was around that area around that time last year.  A good snow had been through the week before and there was some still on the ground.  Mostly, the snow melt made the roads tough.  A lot of the inner roads (higher elevations) of the NF were still closed off.  Although the birds were still on the flocked up side, no complaints with the hunting.

Never know what the weather is going to be like there. Could be snow or might not be any. I've hunted there twice and in 2010 there wasn't any snow  and in 2018 there was a snow storm a couple days before the opener. Best of luck

Wyoming guy here. Yes be prepared for snow. As others have said it can basically snow any time during the season but there will probably still be a snow pack on the national forest roads which makes them inaccessible and cuts into your plans if you didn't plan for that! It takes a long time to go all the way around! With that, a few years ago I killed a bird after a fresh snow and 10 degrees. But yes be prepared! Have a shovel, chains, and new tires!
