ok here is the story of the trip. other than trying to give them merriams in nebraska some lead poisoned. took 2 merriams.
we got there sometime friday afternoon and after getting our tags and some grocery's we got in the woods around 4 oclock mt time. i sent up on an edge of a field where i missed one last year. i didnt see anything then. so after a while i was easing bacck towards the meeting place when i hear some hens yelping some loud purring and then a gobble. i ease up to another field and see a bunch of deer in he edge of the woods. after they ease off i set up and yelp some and have a gobbler answer me and a bunch of hens. sounds like they are easing to the left. i ease up to the edge of the field and i count 31 turkeys, 3 or 4 gobblers 8 to 10 jakes  that was chasing each other, then rest hens. i watch and see where they are going to roost. i see where they are roosting and sat morning i am there right at the edge of the field. bu fly down awat from me towards the woods. so after some chasing and calling nothing.
that afternoon i set up to see if i can see them come into the field. well after watching 20 or so deer going into the fields i see nothing. so i ease the 50 yards to the edge of the field to see if, yes they are there.and they are easing my way hofully to roost in same area and i can get them there. some deer come into the feild to my right and smell me but want sure where i was and of course they are head bobbing and stomping the ground looking around. i felt the turkey would be leaving the field and they where, i try to get close to them but couldnt with that many turkey i thought i would shoot in amongst them to try to spred them out, they were over 120 yards away. i shoot and it seemed like there were birds everywhere. so i did the job to spread them out.
so sunday morning me and my dad ease into the timber where they flew into. we get him to gobbler a few time but that is all i see some hens in the field to my left ad some more deer. so we eased towards where the gobbler flew towards but guess what he was still in the tree he flies out so we go around to the left away from where was and cross an gully and get into a opening and i hit a box call and have one answer us bu where was he?? i ease to to left around the hill and was going to call again but before i could i hear a hen yelp and then he gobbles and i see him coming around the hill we are standing up and in the open behind some small trees but i rise the gun up the whole time dad is saying he is too far i think he is around 60 yards and felt confident in the shot but i didnt liten to dad and shot he rolled gets up and sails off. we step it of and i was surprised it was 80 steps.
that evening i set up in the field where the 31 birds have been but only 6 birds come into it, one mature bird nd some hens and 1 jake. after hour and half they aint getting closer so i ease out of the hiding place and get around in front of them. he didnt get closer than 50 steps or so it seemed. so i eased into the field they were above me by useing the eleavation to hide me was able to get within 15 steps i rised up and he is down. my first merriam. before this all happened i hear my dad shoot, he got a jake. the bird i took was 19.5lbs, 8 inch beard and small round spurs.
monday and tuesday morning nothng happened, i tried to sneak upon some more jakes but the land wouldnt let me. tuesday afternoon was warm and when i set up where we busted the one off of the roost and i start calling real loud and aggressively, on the second yelp i get a double gobble and so i hit him hard and he gobbles agsin. i start working him good and after 30 minutes i see him on the next ridge over and seems like he aint coming, but he eases in the gully i get ready and then a bird runs into the field out of the gully and its a gobbler, he tops about 70 yard away and i wait he is working towards me and at 45 steps i shoot he is down. i pick up the box call and strt  calling loud again. after 10 minutes the one that went into the gully aint said nothing i ease over and get the bird, tke some pic withcell phone and camera. as i moved back to my set up another birds starts gobblingto the left where i had set up the first day. i work these birds across the field until the very white tipped mature bird stops and struts then leaves into the other gully and i ease toward him but dont see them and besides he is headed toward my uncle. he didnt see them. i take some more pics and he rain starts.
overall the weather sucked, wind cloudy and wet cold. i think i saw over 200 turkeys total a heap of whitetail, mule deer 2 bull elk and a badger.
the next morning still raining and wind is blowing so we get packed up and check out of the cabin and hed north to mount rushmore. we get there it is covered in clouds.so we heard home.

Nice pics and hunt recap! Congrats! Were you hunting private or public land?
If I had a dollar for every gobbler I thought I fooled I'd be well off!

Basser69

Hognutz

Congrats on the nice hunt. Too bad about the weather. Nice pictures..Mike :you_rock:
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
If attacked by a mob of clowns, go for the juggler.

BOFF

Congrats on the birds!!

Weather read to be rough.

The badger would have been a plus for me to see. Only seen one other one in the wild!!!!

God Bless,

this was public land mostly. however the first one was on private land from the land owner who let us use his land to get to the national forest.
