Well, today I renewed by membership in the prestigious "tommorow's trophies today" club!!!!  ::) :P ;D

Got rained out first thing this AM, so I took a little drive @ 7:30 and only saw a single hen in my travels.  The turkeys have really gone MIA in the past several days. I don't know where they're hiding out at? I decided to stop and check my trailcams and do a little walking/calling while I was at my buddies farm.  On the way to my cams I spotted 3 hens and a fat red-headed bird picking around out in the field.  I snuck into position to get a better look and discovered it was a jake.  Not having much else going on, I figured I'd try to test my predatory skills and see if I could slip within range of them just for fun (honestly had no intentions of killing him at this point).  I ended up about 55-60 yds, watched them for a couple of minutes and closed the distance to within 40 yds.  I was really hoping that he would turn and start heading the other way so I wouldn't be tempted to take a shot.  Instead, he turned and came walking up the field edge right towards me stopping perfectly in a little opening with his neck all stretched up.  The redneck in me took over and decided that it was time to drop the hammer and field test some Hevi #7's.  He's the first jake that I've taken in quite a while, but no excuses or regrets, it was a fun hunt and I felt like I needed to finish it with a BANG.  Overall, it's been a long, rough season here in NY with lots of close calls and bad luck.  I killed my best gobbler ever a couple of weeks ago and this one is going on the grill.  I passed up 10 jakes (all within 20 yds) during the past week and a half.  There should be plenty of 2 year olds for next year.  Now for the task at hand: 4 days left to get dad a bird...

Hey man congrats on tagging out. Field test worked. I still have a tag and am holding out for one of the toms I have been playing cat and mouse with all season with the crossbow. Got 4 days to get'r done  :) . I may be regretting not whacking one of those many jakes that have been trying to committ turkey suicide by hunter this year.

Good luck with the x-bow.  As I said, the next 4 days is all about trying to get my dad on a longbeard.  There's several that we've been playing games with all season.  Hopefully, his luck will straighten out by noon on tuesday and he can give one of them a paper bracelet.  If not, that's turkey hunting for you...
