Title: Browning BPS 20 Gauge,22"
Post by: RED NECK on March 21, 2020, 01:40:28 PM
I am a Browning fan, they are my favorite shotguns built.I am a bps guy and I have been wanting to add a new 20 gauge and was really looking hard at a semi but I did a little looking around the last few days and found one of the new bps models in a 26" black synthetic bps and I am extremely interested in picking this gun up for triple duty, grouse, ducks and gobblers.

I have already decided to have it drilled and tapped so I have the choice of using a scope, red dot etc if I choose too, down the road for turkey and maybe whitetails.

I also like the idea of the new stock being able to be cut down a little if needed for fit.I think id like to have this gun by mid April so I can set it up and turkey hunt with it this year.

I really like the look of the bps in all black and the new design looks good as well.I already have a few turkey chokes that I can run in the new gun,I have a .555 Indian creek and a .570 briley and tons of different ammo to test out.

How many of you are running a 20 gauge bps for turkey?...It will be a perfect little brother for my 12 Gauge Nwtf 3.5".

I have same gun. I use 585 with 9s. Meadow creek makes a mount that goes on rib for red dot. No drilling required. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200321/8943291709c7bc29fb0c8d7e604c4973.jpg)

That's a nice little mount but I would get it drilled and tapped instead,I have a family friend that is a gunsmith and I like being able to mount a scope, red dot or reflex sight on my guns if I decide to use one.I am trying to hold off for a few weeks yet on buying but may pull the trigger later this coming week.

What optic are you using?Do you have the new version of the bps? I will be using #6's or tss #7 as we cant use anything smaller than #7's

I found an almost nib 22" 20 ga bps micro with 4 chokes, sling and case for a really good price and I like the look of the wood.I am meeting up with the older gentleman tomorrow around 11am. He bought the gun nib from a conservation officer a few years back and put a few turkey shells through it.He said it is in mint shape and he has no reason to keep it,it is a beautiful looking gun and I am going to buy it if it is mint.I can use the $400+ I would save on something else.

He is even bringing the 3 shells he has left from the box of turkey shells.

The gun was as advertised,he was a man in his mid 60's who had recently been gifted a newer semi auto and didn't need this gun and wanted the money to pay for a fishing trip for trout coming up.

I misunderstood him yesterday on phone and he only shot three shells in total,I received 7 #5 longbeards,4 chokes(including .565 Carlson turkey choke),sling and case.I was going to need to pick up a box of #5's as its about the only 20 gauge turkey load I am out of at the moment.I shouldered gun and it is perfect.I would rate it a 99-100 and very well looked after.I got a real good deal on it and I am getting it dipped and drilled and tapped and It will become my go to 20 gauge turkey gun in the coming years.

I already have an email out for dipping costs and turnaround time,I am not sure it can or will be this spring with what is happening in the world, I hope it can be done.I am pretty excited to get this deal on this gun.

I am taking it and dropping it off tomorrow evening to have it drilled and tapped,I am not sure which base I'll use.I may use a small one as I do not think I'll use anything but a red dot or reflex ever on the gun but I will find out tomorrow. It will cost me $60 to have it done and I will have it back in a few days.

I am sending it away to have it dipped in bottomland camo and should have it back by April 18-20th at latest as it depends on how many days it takes in mail.

These are the three patterns I have it down too.I like "new" bottomland and treebark more than the original I believe.

I had a great chat with the guy that is going to dip my gun and he was straight up and said that I would be pushing it to have it back by end of April as he is busy and then there is the shipping question,I agreed and plan on hunting with it this season as is and sending it to him early June to have dipped.

I have to be honest, I am a little hesitant to ship something right now that is not a priority anyway.I am now going to decide on either a vortex venom or burris fast fire 3 for the new gun.
Title: Re: Browning BPS 20 Gauge,22"
Post by: RED NECK on March 26, 2020, 01:22:07 PM
I ordered the marlin 336 base and it arrived today so I went and dropped gun off.I plan on using a Vortex venom,Burris fast fire 3 or Nikon spur for turkey but I had him drill and tap it for both little bases in case I choose to put a scope on it.I can just take off the 2nd base when I am running a red dot.I really like the gun as is with the wood finish and am thinking about keeping it "original".

I am looking around trying to figure out who makes a nice leather custom "turkey" sling that I can purchase in the next few weeks.

Post by: slicksbeagles1 on March 29, 2020, 07:09:09 AM
I was going to suggest keeping it original it would be worth more if you pass it down I don't know but you might be able to find a camo fore end and stock for it and save the wood.

Look into the Camo Skins. Mossy Oak has them and they take a little effort but work great and come off w/o residue. Definitely be ready for opening day

I have used the skins on at least a dozen guns the last 5-6 years.I don't want to go that route on this gun.I am going to hunt with it as is for this year and go from there.I am undecided at this time as whether I want it dipped or not.I like the "older" original look of this gun.

A lot of the Micro Medallion BPS, 20's had really nice wood.  Don't dip the stock and forearm.  I've removed the polyurethane off of several Browning's, Benelli's, etc. and replaced w/ a matt finish, hand rubbed, urethane finish which will withstand the rigors of waterfowl hunting and looks great.  After turkey season, when you've got the time, properly done the matt finish requires @ two weeks of work and wait, PM me and I'll walk you through the process.  The matt finished wood w/ a blued, bead blasted, non-reflective finish on all the metal parts is extremely durable and looks really great.

Thanks for the idea, however I would send it away to have any work done to it,the shop has all those finishes and such if I were to decide on that.I can't see myself worrying too much about value or even sentimental value for the future. It is just a hunting gun,I am just undecided if I want to have it camoed or not.I do like the idea of having it dipped in something I don't already have on another gun but I also like the idea of just buying a nice custom leather sling for it as well...again..thanks for the ideas.Good luck this spring, My season opens April 25th so I have lots of time to kill yet, great for scouting and patterning.

I ended up purchasing another Bushnell trs 25 to mount on this gun.I like the other couple I have and for the price they seem to be hard to match,I left gun at gunsmiths and should have it back in a week or so.I am not in a real rush as I plan on taking it and patterning it in a few weeks.

Title: Re: Browning BPS 20 Gauge,22"
Post by: RED NECK on April 02, 2020, 05:40:35 PM
Apparently, I have no luck as the trs 25 was sold out.It was on sale and must have sold the other one that said was in stock.I am going to just bite the bullet here and buy the vortex venom,It is pricey up here. The cheapest spot I can find it is $428.98 after taxes and shipping.

Post by: RED NECK on April 02, 2020, 05:57:00 PM
I found it and purchased it with free shipping,CAD $428.27 for the vortex venom.I do hope I like it on this setup.I am also sending it away to have it dipped after the season and am going with "new" bottomland finish.

The vortex venom arrived yesterday,I just need the gun back from the gunsmith so I can install it and then dial it in and pattern it.I believe he is d&t later this week and hopefully I pick it up,I will be going on the 18th to pattern it.

I am picking the gun up tomorrow and will get venom attached and this gun dialed in and patterned it this next few days.

Post by: RED NECK on April 16, 2020, 11:24:12 AM
I just got the venom mounted,I am heading Saturday to get this patterned and dialed in.I had him drill and tap it with both pieces of the marlin 336 base so If i wanted to mount a "scope" I can.I tried both pieces and I refer the venom mounted on the front mount towards bead on barrel,I just took other piece of base off and will put in two screws to fill..I can't wait to shoot this little gun and see what it does.

The gun shoots poa and patterns amazing with the .555 IC with hevi #6 and tss #7 however that 428.00 vortex venom shoots 3" low as I am bottomed out on vertical adjustment.I need to aim at 3/4 top of toms head for it to hit at base of neck at 20 or 40 yards.I like it but that really pisses me off.I guess I will have to find a shim,I am not lowering myself to pieces of a tin can to do it though.I love the gun and if I can get the sight shimmed I will be happy with it.I didn't even have to adjust left-right on it,It was dead on with me just adjusting yesterday in house.

I didn't take pics or keep targets as I was busy with other things when we were patterning.

Before zeroing red dot move elevation and windage screws up/down and right/left. Then you will be good to go.

I had already moved it up and down yesterday,I have ran out of adjustment,It will not adjust any higher it hits 3-3.5" low maxed out,at 20 yards or 40 yards.I see you can get shims,I may just take it off and see if It will shoot on my tc 20 gauge single shot and use something else on this or nothing at all.I am not overly impressed with it for the money I spent.I have spent 100 and less and been happier with a red dot and reflex sight.i think it is as overrated as the claw sling but I will make it work on one of my guns.I appreciate the help.

Its common with this sight from what I read,I knew that before I bought it. I found and used a little silver broadhead ring under the front screw.I am going back in the morning.I am hoping that I will have enough adjustment now and It does not look as ghetto as I thought. It will do until I get the "real" shim here.

I will probably have to adjust it down now, which is fine with me.If I wanted to Kentucky windage a gun,I wouldn't use a 430 dollar red dot to do it.I sent vortex an email seeing if they have any shims in stock,I used to do business with the Canadian guy a lot.

Mine is mounted to the rib and maybe that's why I did not have those issues. I'm surprised the red dot cost that much.

It will not work on that gun with or without a shim as I just went up and tested it again,I am not impressed with that pos sight to be honest.First and last foray into Vortex optics and overpriced electronic devices,on the other hand the bead shoots poa and I will just use the bead to hunt, like I should have in the first place.I think the sight is faulty from vortex.I am sending it back to where I bought it for a refund.

So i just took it off and mounted it on my win lb sxp 20 and it definitely looks like it would be fine as the red dot is way lower on it than the bps.I find it odd as I've never had this issue with a gun and a sight before,I may check this tomorrow to see if it shoots on the sxp. Would it be the mount, drill and tap and gun?

Mount may be to high. Generally the mini red dots are mounted very close to the receiver/rib.

I like that it hits a little higher than bead instead of lower or"dead on,I always aim for base of neck anyway no matter what gun I use.I honestly prefer beads and fiber optics on my guns and just started trying red dots 2 years ago as I was always keep it simple and easy,I have used scopes off and on.

I had a brand new truglo come apart on me last weekend after 6 turkey shells on my rem 20 ga,I put a scope back on it and patterned it today. I am about turned off on red dots,I have two on the way and they may be my last, ever.

Back to keeping it simple and easy.

I definitely got a lemon as I just turned it on and now the red dot is way up in the left hand corner and you can barely see it is so high.I have had one other red dot do this,a week ago with a 66 dollar truglo. The truglo lens actually had fallen apart..lol.

I sent am email asking for a refund or a new one on my doorstep by Tuesday afternoon.

I'm not going to cry over the milk as I didn't spill it.Did i say how impressed I am with this gun and the bead,it sits there and shines and glimmers, perfect size.I do not think there is anything a browning pump can't do correctly.
I always have been a bps guy, they just do it for me,and seeing as I am a southpaw,It is a perfect match.

So today was productive I learned vortex cs is as good as it gets and that I am not going to trust the new one that I will receive as a replacement so I am just going to sell it for a little bit less than I paid and recoup most of my money.

I also was tinkering a bit and mounted a Bushnell trophy xlt I have in realtree camo with the circle plex and I am pretty fond of how It fits, feels and I plan on setting this gun up with the same scope in black,It just is not here as its with my other guns at my camp.I already know It shoots bead poa so I am going to dial it in with scope, hunt with it this season and decide on whether to have it dipped or keep it natural.

I believe my foray into anymore red dots is over,I will deal with what I have already and make them work but from here on out,it is bead, fiber optic or a scope.

I sure am glad I was bored this morning and clicked on a link to a store I recently purchased a choke from as the item I wanted was back in stock,I purchased two of them.I will be adding these instead of shooting with a scope.

Truglo Tru•Point™ Xtreme Universal Shotgun Sights

I have used the cheaper plastic tru bead on numerous guns for years but wanted the metal versions for a few guns, one for this and one for my Rem 870 20 gauge.

I only ordered one new call for this year,I deal with a few custom call makers up here.I have a few from Gobblestalker but I really like dealing with Big Creek Calls,I know he is a fellow member on here and just a great guy to deal with so I tend to get him to build my calls the majority of the time.I seen he had done one like this and I had to have it,It sounds better than It looks. Thanks again.Slate over glass,

I have kind of soured on vortex customer service, well their communication anyway.I sent mine back with a tracking number yesterday at 10am and was told to email them the number I did,I received an email at 5pm stating it was looked after.I just want a straight answer on when I will be getting the replacement and/or a tracking number and my questions answered like a man and a bit more professional manner.I would not leave any customer hanging like that,I would flat out tell them what I knew, ether way, good or bad.I assume he is towing the company line and being hush hush for some reason.

Either way first and last foray for me into Vortex optics,I wouldn't trust that crap ever again.

I had recently stumbled upon a barely used weaver reflex sight(vortex venom-nikon spur type) for a good deal and I bought it for one of my 20 gauges.I just mounted it on the bps as it arrived 20 minutes ago.The red dot on this went down on this screen so It obviously was not the mount as the issues on the venom,I knew it was a lemon as soon as it tried it but I wanted to prove myself wrong.

I got a response and tracking number but I was told this was to be looked after Monday morning at 9am and here we are Tuesday afternoon at 3pm and the item has yet to ship and they shipped it Canada post instead of overnight courier.I am kind of hit or miss with them,I am happy they are standing up and honoring their warranty but two days have passed since the start of the work week,They could have shipped it courier overnight and I would have it this week to decide on if I would use it.I now 110% know I will be selling it and not looking back.

I give their cs a 10-10 but I would say they lack communication and if you give a time frame, meet it.They definitely deserve to be looked at if interested in an optic.I am easily turned off items if I get a bad one,It happens.I hold no grudge but I wont buy another.

They have reimbursed me shipping costs and apologized for the little delay,I honestly cant be upset at all, they have been excellent to deal with on a service side of things with what is going on in the "real" world.

I've been on both ends of the customer service routine thousands of times in the last 20 years and they are tough to beat....imo.

I just put 2 tss 7"s and 2 hevi 6's in my coat pocket and plan on taking the bps in the morning.I have had it in woods only one other day.I was told that from 300 yards the barrel was like a mirror as I was walking out after our hunt.It was the push I needed to have it dipped after season.I will be going with bottomland or break up,I like the break up camo pattern better but I am undecided as I realize it makes no difference. The gun shoots and handles very well.

I'm going to take the gun apart and send it in for camo dipping later in the week and I think I am settled on bottomland as the pattern.I have been back and forth over keeping it in original stock finish or sending it in and getting it camo'd and If it was a blued barrel instead of gloss I think I would keep it original.

Seeing as I plan on using it for turkey hunting and couldn't care any less about sentimental value or monetary value of it after I hunt with it that it will be better suited in a camo finish. He only has a select few Mossy oak patterns and then some others,no realtree patterns.I do like the tree bark camo pattern he offers as well as the bottomland.

I am probably going to shoot some grouse, ducks and geese with it as well in the next few years.

I'm going to ship this via Fedex early next week,I'm in the middle of buying a warbird protective guard as I may purchase another vortex venom when I get gun back from dipper. If I don't do it now Ill never send it in and I have lots of time before season.

I will be sending him another handful in the next few months after season as I have  an 1187 youth in black,a Winchester 1300 in black and a rem 870 20 ga youth that Ill be getting done.

Gun looks great, good luck with it. You have more 20"s then anyone I know, don't think I saw you with a Franchi Affinity  yet? would love to get your opinion of one, compared to all the others you have. Looking to get a new 20 next year, semi-auto 24" - 26" barrel , just too many choices, cant go the route you have taken, so was hoping you can post some kind of final comparison of all your "Hobbies". Thanks , have a great season.

WOW that looks great and best of luck with it. I love putting together new turkey guns. I have one being dipped right now and have a few toys to add to it when it gets back. Hope you get a nice bird this spring.

I'd have to say that I like all my guns,I am not overly impressed at this time with how picky my sx4 is,however I am waiting on a .585 trulock. I have not had much interest in Franchi guns,I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I found something I like though.

My one regret, is selling my Winchester 20 sxp longbeard that I had to have trigger work done on, It patterned everything well for turkey shells with different chokes, and yet the sx4 is the pickiest I have ever seen. I was just irritated with it that I had to spend extra on a trigger job, and Winchesters cs was useless, I am a Browning/Winchester fan. Browning guns are my favorite.

As for "new hobbies" I'll be on the lookout for a new Winchester 20 gauge Sxp longbeard to add again. If I had to pick 1 20 gauge, Id probably pick a Browning Bps, because I am a southpaw and I love bps shotguns.

Thanks for the reply, I too love my BPS 20 , but it is my close in field gun for upland land birds,  even bought 1 for my south paw son.  Guess I will just bite the wallet and try the Affinity. Thanks again and stay safe, have a great season.

I only fired a longbeard #6 today as I already knows how It patterns the other shells with the bead sight,I have to say that I am pretty much sold on using 4 different shells from this gun to 40 yards with the .555 ic as It shoots them all well, hunting patterns. I may take this gun out once more when I get chokes for my sx4 but I am happy.

I had purchased a warbird vortex venom protector, then I decided to sell my venom.I was planning on shooting the bead but today I purchased another vortex venom,in excellent shape for a real good price and should have it Friday.

I am going to mount it and test it out and play around with it, see what comes of it. It was the original plan for this gun 13 months ago.

The venom arrived yesterday,I mounted 336 marlin base, warbird protector and It just sits too high on this gun.I took it off,I will use a bead until I locate the fiber optic sights I want for this gun, I used venom on another 20 gauge setup.

I have been trying to find some truglo gobble dot fiber optics, for months with no luck.I want the good ones for this gun, I happen to come across Williams universal slugger sights and ordered a set for this gun. I'd like(hope) to have them this week and maybe get them on gun and sight It in Saturday morning with them.

Looks like 10-15 mm of rain for opening day as of now next Sunday,If that is the case this is the gun I will take.

Nice guns. Fixing to purchase my wife a bps 20ga youth with a 22 or 24 inch barrel.  Only shotgun she will carry. I told her I would get it  camo. She said no way.

Thanks,I like this gun,I really like the Williams sights too,I just installed them and while I was doing it I snapped one of the little screws into 2 pieces after reading, to not over tighten. I over tightened,oh well.I emailed them asking about sending me a few screws, maybe next year for the fibers.I have a red dot on the way to test Saturday and if not, bead sight it is.

I actually located those tiny tiny little screws and ordered 12 of them in through work and I purchased another Williams sight which will be arriving today, screws will be by Tuesday at latest.I am going to get up and go check and see if the birds are roosting where they do sometimes tomorrow morning and then spend an hour or so shooting a few guns and then It's time to relax at my camp and have some wild turkey poppers, turkey breast shish kabobs and an ice cold beer.

Opening morning is Sunday and It looks like rain and extreme winds,I made sure  have more time this spring too hunt as last year I was crazy busy with work,I did not take on as much work,It hasn't been overly busy anyway with everybody watching their bank accounts.I have 3 day weekends the whole month of May and should get out for an hour hunt each morning,or hopefully most mornings.

I heard some gobbling this morning from one of my favorites spots,I will be going there tomorrow. I came home and packed some things and now I am just waiting for my Father to arrive around 12,then we are going to go try a new choke and a new red dot for a few of my guns and enjoy a few cold ones and a great bbq afterwards at our camp.

I won't be sighting the bps in as my new Williams did not get here,so that will be a next weekend deal.Good luck to all,in Ontario, except for the trespassing slob thief poacher around my area that I have called the opp and mnr on numerous times. I guess donuts and coffee are #1.

I am going to get the bps dialed in with the Williams sights, maybe tonight after work, or tomorrow sometime and get it in the woods. I never had time last weekend or yet this week after work,I packed 3 20 gauges for the next few days to use in the woods.
