Title: Remington 20" ga compact 21"
Post by: Hooks' n' Beards' on May 08, 2017, 09:21:30 PM
I am going tomorrow to pick this gun up,i really am not sure if i will get the black synthetic or the realtree hardwoods version,i eventually will be putting a sure shot grip on it so i am undecided about spending the extra 70 dollars for the camo stock and forend. I will be picking up a .575 Carlson turkey choke and i already have 2 boxes of triple beard,1 box of double xx #4,1 box of remington nitro #5's and 1 box of long beard #5's to pattern Thursday after work before i take it Friday hunting.I will be using a tru glow tru bead ghost ring sight for optics on it....

Good luck!  Get you some federal hw7 or hevi 7a to try also.  I don't think you'll go back.

I patterned the gun this morning, the triple beard 5,6,7 give me the best pattern out to 30 yards, longbeards were good as well but i will be shooting the triple beards the last 3 weeks this year.

Picked up 4 boxes of federal mag shok fc yesterday, also put deposit on the 20 ga sureshot grip as they had to order it in from supplier.I should have it by end of June.I am thinking of having gun/stock dipped this summer.I have not decided on which pattern i want yet though.

I picked up 2 more boxes of Federal FC #5 3" today along with a tightwad choke.I now have 11 boxes of shells,5 different types to tinker with this summer.I am sending it to be dipped in July and it will be drilled and tapped,i am not sure if i will use a scope but i will be ready if i decide too.I will be carrying this little gun a wee bit the rest of the season,as i shot a 19.8 lbs,1"spurs and 9.5" bearded tom this morning with my 12 ga Browning Bps NWTF 3.5",one tag to go...

So,i have decided to have it dipped in tiger stripe-Vietnam when my shurshot grip and forend come in.I will be looking into a scope or a red dot as well.I have it narrowed down to the trs-25 from bushnell, leupold 1-4 with turkey plex, simmons pro diamond or a bushnell 1.75 with circle-plex....I may or may not use a scope but i am getting it drilled and tapped.I have only had gun in the woods on two hunts so far.Maybe take it later this week.

Looks like you got yourself a good start.  I think this may be my next shotgun also.  Have one of your shops order some of the hevi shot and/or the fed heavy weight 7's, even if it takes a while.  Like you said, you'll be shooting and resting this summer.  Good luck, remember to put pics up after the camo job, and pattern pics......or it didn't happen!???? :toothy9:

I cant seem to figure out how to get pictures on this forum anymore.I seen that you can order the gun skin in tiger stripe-vietnam.I will try that before i spend close to 300 dollars for a dip.I have used the mossy oak graphic kits on a handful of guns and they work great.Hard to beat for the price and it gives me a project at home for the off season.

I just purchased two of the bushnell trs-25 red dots from amazon,60 dollars each, they will be here in about a month so it says.I have some other guns that i may scope with one as well but i read all the reviews and for the price and this gun i figured this would be a great little sight for it.

What base are you going to use? I'm looking for a multi slot base and having trouble finding which one works on 870 20ga.

I am back,I forgot my password...I ended up not receiving the trs sights from amazon but got refunded.I put a saddle mount on instead of getting it drilled and tapped and am either buying a simmons pro diamond or maybe a sight mark reflex sight or the bushnell trs today or monday.I picked up some mag blend to test this weekend as I am going to pattern a few of my guns.I really like this gun with the shurshot grip and saddle mount,I am just not sure which scope/red dot/reflex I want.I am leaning towards either the sightmark or thge simmons as I want a circle or diamondplex for the toms head...I am even thinking about the gobblestopper from truglo.....

I picked up the sight mark reflex sight at work today,I just got home and put it on.I am more than happy with it.I am sending this gun to be dipped in tiger stripe vietnam camo after this season and I am heading out tomorrow to pattern a few of my guns, including 2 20 gauges and a 12 gauge single shot.

I am still not thrilled with 20 gauges past 30 yards.I took this gun and got it dialed in today with 2 3/4 target load.I then put multiple shells from this list through this gun and the tight wad choke and the carlson choke.Up to 30 yards it really doesn't matter which shell, they will all kill but the only shell I would hunt with is the Longbeard 3" #5

-3rd degree 3 inch #5,6,7
-high velocity federal with flightwad control 3 inch #5 and #6
-triple beard 3 inch #5,6,7
-double xx 3 inch #4

I am ok with them being a 30 yard gun.I am done tinkering and will be hunting with the Longbeard #5.

I can't order ammo across the border from those places.I am a Canadian,I will look for it locally.I think this gun looks great and handles well,it will look great as a safe queen while i tote my 12 gauge tc and bps around.

I found a local guy that will be getting hevi 13 in # 5 and #6 in shortly.I bought this gun there last spring.I will be picking up 2 boxes at least.I am also putting a scope on my gun.I am not a red dot/reflex guy.I like open sights or an old fashioned scope.

I really do not trust batteries and the fancy red dots and reflex sights,I just can't do it for hunting.

Black Death is starting to wear on me....I canceled my order for the camo wrap and I am really liking the all black look for this gun.I am hoping to have the hevi ammo by the 7th of april, and If not I am taking a day trip and heading 4 hours to the closest bass pro shop to have a look around,I haven't been there since 2005.I am wanting to get this gun patterning at 40 yards like it currently does at 30 yards. It has been a chore to find any decent ammo other than the longbeard 3 inch #5's....pretty sad up here...I know for a fact that most do not carry hevi because most hunters are to cheap to buy it and complain about the price.

I found a few boxes of hevi shot magnum blend and bought it,It will be here in a few days.I am hoping it gives me a decent pattern out to 40 yards.I will still be buying a few boxes of hevi 13 in #6 next week if the guy gets it in.How many of you have shot the mag blends?

I broke down and picked up a truglo red dot with green/red dots, for the price I couldn't pass it up and needed the scope for another gun.I think I will get over the trust issue with batteries rather easily...at least I hope so.I am hoping to have all guns ready to go and pattern them next weekend again with the hevi shot ammo.

I just ordered two boxes of longbeard #6's and have two boxes of mag blends on the way.I hope these pattern out to 40 yards for me so I don't have to buy the #6 hevi 13's when they arrive locally.I may pick up a different choke to test all these shells,I will either buy the hevi choke or the long beard xr choke next weekend, I think.

My gun wrap should be here when i arrive home from work later tonight and I will get started with the job of getting it all wrapped up.I have a week or so before I will be heading to pattern my guns again,so lots of time.

I just spent two hours wrapping the gun with the tiger stripe pattern,I have done 10 guns now, this was my first with "gun skins".The gun turned out really good,I have yet to get one gun 100% perfect,I think it's impossible.I think this was a tricky one,the barrel gave me a few headaches but I am very happy with it and i will get pictures up later this week.

I also had my mag blends arrive.I plan on using the leftovers to wrap a few different scopes/reflex/red dots later this week.It is definitely my favorite camo ever on a gun.I don't see myself sending it to be dipped now.

Post by: RED NECK on April 04, 2018, 11:18:11 AM
The two red dots and the reflex sight I bought to try will be here april 11th.So that will give me two weeks to the day to get this and another 20 gauge patterned and dialed in out to 40 yards.I now need to decide on a new sling.I may go with the "claw" but also may just stick with what I have, as I like it and it works.

I believe my goal is to get this gun patterned with the long beard #6's out to 40 yards with either the tightwad or carlson choke that I have,if not then I will try the mag blends and the hevi 13 #6's.

I am heading on a road trip to bass pro early saturday morning, its a 4 hour drive.I put 2 truglo gobble stopper sights on hold.I am going to put one on my encore and one on my 870 and return the others to amazon when they arrive.i may also try and locate some other ammo when i am up there and maybe a few other small items.I am more excited to get away for the day and hang out with a couple good friends.

I put a 27 dollar reflex sight on this gun this morning, then went and patterned it and once I got it dialed in with target load.I put 8- 3" turkey loads through the gun to see if the cheap chinese reflex sight would hold zero and It did.I am sending all other red dots and sights back and keeping the 27 dollar reflex sight on the gun this year.

I got bored with the tiger stripe look,I didn't even hunt with this gun last year,I peeled the gun wrap off,and have the bottomland gun wrap on the way,I am going to redo it and maybe pick up a new black claw sling and hunt with it a few times this spring.I have the tight wad and .575 Carlson choke and may try something else when i head up to bass pro on the 11th of March.I am planning on mounting the Bushnell 4x32 with circle plex as well.I was going to add the 1187 but I figure, why not just change this up a bit and bring it out of the safe a few times this spring.

Finally got out and got scope dialed in with 7.5" and then I fired 5 Winchester longbeard #6's to get it setup and dialed in perfect out to 40 yards. The pattern with the .575 Carlson and lb #6's was excellent out to 40 yards.I did save the target but It got thrown out by someone when I got home.I was more than impressed with the pattern,I do not count pellets but I believe there was at least 25-30 in the neck and head of bird and a real solid pattern with no holes all around.I give it a 10-10 and will be more than confident out to 40 yards.

I found my father taking a liking to this gun when we were out shooting today.

I took this gun out Sunday and had some action but just jakes in gun range.I found myself kicking my butt for putting the scope on the gun,so I put the little reflex sight on today and plan on patterning it to get it ready for tomorrow, this is the first time I have used it with shurshot grip on in the woods.

My good friend has had the same gun for about 8 years and was up hunting this weekend and could not believe what mine looks like now compared to his(his wife uses it hunting). He kept his the same as when he bought it,no modifications.

His wife has killed 4-5 toms with it and I believe 2 jakes her first year.

I ended up going with the fiber optics I had installed and fired one shell and had 42 pellets in a 8" circle target at 40 yards with wlb #6's last night.I am just heading to look for a different set of fiber optics, or maybe the Bushnell trs red dot if they have one.I am thinking of spray painting the gun this weekend,I like the wrap but am thinking of trying a custom spray paint job with a dark grey, black and a darkish green,I may use grass and sticks as the pattern from the woods. The gun is fun to carry and pattern very well with the long beard #6's.

I purchased a Bushnell trs 25 in realtree ap camo to put on gun this afternoon, dial it in tonight and hunt with it.I was going to get black one but it was last camo one and I figured I may go back and buy another one in black for another gun later on.

It took me 3 2 3/4 7.5 to get it dialed in dead on at 20 yards, dropped back to 40 yards and fired 1 longbeard #6 and one Tss #7, I could not be more happy with the setup, the long beards are a great shell,my favorite lead shell ever built for the 12 or 20 gauge.I usually never counted but did,I had 27 pellets in the turkeys head area and another 11 in neck area with the #6's at 40 yards, deadly pattern.I definitely think the tss #7 shells are the best you can get,we can only use #7's right now but they are awesome,I did not count but there was at least 20 more pellets than the longbeards in the same area.I plan on shooting the longbeards from this gun and keeping the tss for a few other guns.

I am going to do some researching tonight on how I want to paint the gun,I may do acrylic paint/sponge again in a grey and black or maybe spray paint in a grey and black.

I think I am willing to try this on my own,I may use dark grey, black and a dark green that I already have and use a sponge and sponge paint it.I am not hunting the next few days as I have a few things to look after and supposed to be downpours for two days,I may have enough time to take the wrap off, clean it and then paint it and not miss a day hunting with gun.

I am about 50% done,I took gun apart, cleaned it after I took wrap off.I then taped up where i needed took it outside and laid it on cardboard and gave it a once over with the beige, let it dry, flipped it over and sprayed it down.I did have a few runs in it,I just sanded it down a bit and scuffed up the beige a bit,I didn't worry about it being "perfect" it is still a bit tacky so I took it inside hung it in basement and hit it with a mist to cover the "blemishes" and it is hanging up with fan on too dry, should be good to go in an hour or so.

I already started on the forend and saddle mount as it was already dry.I started with khaki and grey, next is green and then black and then we will see what or if I need to add to it.I went back and bought a dark green as I wanted to add a bit to the gun.I also went off script a little and instead of doing the sponge pattern in one way,I just went with what I thought looks better,I am happy so far and can't wait to see it when it is done, fun little project when you are stuck at home with work related stuff.I think I should be able to get it done tomorrow and back together and hunt with it on Saturday.

I was nervous to do it but feel a lot better now then after the first coat had some runs,I realize now I should have hung it up,oh well.It is just a "beater" hunting gun I drag around the woods during turkey season.

I am about 95% done,I may need a little touch up after it dries.I got out for a hunt this morning in the wind and rain and had some action but....they went out another direction and we needed to get back and get some work done.

I took some pictures of this little project from start all the way through so far,I was hesitant to start and then a little nervous after the primer/first coat but now I am absolutely Impressed with it,It turned out better than I figured It would,I love it! I may add a coat of matte clear finish if needed,we will see.I should have gun back together later today,I am heading up country for a few hours, work to do but plan on stopping and buying a 2nd Bushnell trs 25 red dot for another setup.I am impressed with that little sight.

Here are some pictures of the project....AND IT WONT ALLOW ME TO POST THEM-IT SAYS THEY ARE JPEG.......................I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO SWITCH THEM TO POST..............UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!

another little thing I enjoyed with this project is using the tip of a turkey tail feather to paint under the vent rib on barrel  and the small areas on saddle mount from a tom I shot last spring.

I have gun back together and I did touch it up in a few small areas and also noticed it is still a tad tacky in a few places,97% dry and one small area that I must have overlooked was tackier,it was the size of a wood match on forend.I will take pics of it finished and post them in a few hours when I get back home.

I ran a Simmons Pro Diamond for years; tough scope and I never had any issues.

I went thru all of your post. Your project turned out great. As I was reading I was wondering when you were going to find about the TSS Loads. Glad you got her setup like you like. I have the same model of shotgun for my daughter and she as taking a few Turkey with it. I am setup me one up for this up coming 2020 season.

I actually have the gun apart right now as I touched up the paint job after the season,I spray painted the underneath of saddle mount black and added more black to the forend and in a few other places.I need a new bead as I broke the original one on it a month back.I haven't shot anything with it yet as I have a lot and I just haven't had a chance when carrying the gun.It took about three weeks for the smell to go away from the paint.I like the paint job better than the mossy oak graphic camo wrap.

I like the feel of the gun and it cycles smooth and has been a good purchase.I have no issues being happy with this purchase and project.

As I start to get thinking about the upcoming spring season I purchased a new fiber optic sight for this gun and mounted my scope back on this gun and I do plan on using this setup at least for a few days this spring. It will be up on the first day I go to pattern a few guns.

I have been thinking about buying another youth model as well,I may end up with it before long.I am waiting for it to go on sale locally. If I do I plan on keeping it the way it comes and adding a tru bead fiber optic.

I had this gun out today and dialed it in and patterned it with 3" longbeard 5-6 out to 40 yards,I set it up with a 1-4x32 Bushnell circle plex for this year.I hope I carry it for a day or two, maybe.

I'm not selling the gun and I am not tossing a legal shell to shoot a shell that is not legal for me to shoot.I could shoot tss #7 if I wanted but I don't need or want to from this gun,I am more than happy shooting longbeards from this gun with one of the half dozen chokes  I already have for it. ;)

Agree 100 percent.  You don't have to shoot TSS to kill a Turkey for sure.  Here is a 20 gauge pattern shot out of a 870 using Longbeard 6's shot at a lasered 40 yards using a factory  Rem Turkey choke.  How much better does one need.

I didnt know the 9s were illegal so yeah I hear you there. I have a 21" 870 compact I just put together and I got about what you have there with the LBs. I didnt want to spend a lot on TSS but man the difference is just night and day.
Nice gun you have by the way. I didnt mean to come off as arrogant . hope you didnt take it that way.

I have no issues with anybody so no worries,I make a good living and have money to throw around on ammo, however I also have an addiction to guns and can only feed so many of them tss shells as they are not cheap.I would shoot tss #7's if I thought It would be needed but I can easily get 35-40 pellets in the kill zone of a tom at 40 yards with the lb 5-6's. This gun also is about 6-7th in my lineup at best.I think have used it 4 -5 times in 3 years.

I am thinking of buying another and keeping it stock. But I am not 100% sure yet.The gun is light and cycles well and shoots very well.I am not a huge Remington fan but this gun is worth what it sells for,the only thing is if you get the black finish it will "rust" no matter what.I have a buddy that has one and he hunts with it for ducks and turkeys and it is hideous looking, still goes boom though.

I was all set to use it setup with a scope this year.I made an online order and was sent the wrong red dot for another gun, however It works on this one so I decided to just go ahead and use it.I may even paint it to match the gun if I like it after patterning it.

I found a Rem 870 20 gauge "NWTF" version in black matte with a 20" barrel in "excellent" condition up here,I called the man and left him a message. If it isn't sold and he is willing to ship I am interested in buying it as I was thinking about a 2nd one anyway.I already have extra forearms and stocks in camo and a pistol grip that would fit it as well.

I just got off the phone with the older man and he isn't interested in shipping it.I said Ok, have a good day. I can't understand why these people post guns on a buy/sell website and then won't ship or do not know how too.I can buy a new one for cheap close by anyway if I decide to add one.

I was debating on getting this gun dipped but I like my camo paint job I did, so I decided to go ahead and spray pain the original stock and forend I had in black, and the last few days I have been taking my time and painting it to match the rest of gun and I also broke down and decided to paint the scope the same way, I am almost done with a little bit of work the next few days It will be ready.

The scope is complete and the forend will need a little touch up once it dries later, the flash makes them seem bright but they match perfectly to the gun I painted a few years ago. I do plan on hunting with this gun more this year than I have so far.

I ended up deciding to paint everything a darker "camo" than I had done and I think It looks better than before and isnt as "shiny" I think I am going to shoot it with regular stock and a set of truglo fiber optic sights this year, I have this gun drilled and tapped for a red dot, and use a saddle for the scope when needed as I only had 2 holes for a little marlin 336 base drilled and tapped. I am planning on sending the shurshot stock in to be dipped for another gun.

We have been without power since Saturday afternoon, we had a massive storm/tornado go through and lost power, worst storm since I was 12,30 years ago to hit this area other than a tornado that went through 40 miles away in 2019. Lots of damage,we got lucky,no damage at house,my camp's deck and outhouse are no longer standing, but oh well...working,running a generator for 4 days, getting gouged at the pumps from the little town down the road that had power,I live in a town with 15 000 people and not one store was open,no gas,no food, nothing, half the town still won't have power for days, ours is on. The little town was gouging people an extra 40 cents a litre for gas, I hope they get their gas stations burnt down, crooks, useless immigrants as well. Stinky heads, the worst kind.Jagmeet bag lickers.

I had seen a nice brand new, little 21" Rem 870 compact 20 and had told the man I'd buy it but we had both lost power, finnaly made the deal after work today, I already have plans to have this drilled and tapped and install a custom low mount and a red dot for next year.

It will ship tomorrow, It is the realtree edge/black matte, I won't be painting this one. I have been looking for a 2nd one for a year, great price and gun is brand new.

I have had luck with Carlson 575, IC .555 and the factory Remington turkey choke in several that I have put together. I let the aiming system that I am gonna use determine how tight a constriction I want. Usually running a red dot I choose the IC .555 as consistently with TSS it has been the tightest with the Remington factory choke coming in a close second. I like the Carlson 575 which usually does around 50/50 for rifle sighted guns (Usually 250 in 10" 250 in 20"), in which I have several. The little 870's make perfect turkey guns IMO.

And I agree we need to get rid of these Liberal POS,s that are destroying our countries!!!!
